Does Disclosure Make Sense?
By Gene Steinberg

Perhaps the most anticipated announcement in modern-day human history would be an admission — or revelation — that we are being visited by one or more advanced intelligent races from other planets. It is the sort of dream most anyone can embrace, what with all the sci-fi books, movies and TV shows that have become part of our cultural meme.

So when you see Captain Kirk and his first officer, Mr. Spock, on the classic (if not terribly successful) TV series and the more successful movies, you aren’t going to be startled by the alien ears. You might even buy something similar to fit on your own ears during a Halloween party.

Yes, bad aliens are often depicted, but the Star Trek — and Star Wars — ethos is that space people are essentially no different from us in any critical way. There are good aliens and bad aliens.

That would seem to help make Earthlings very accepting of alien life. So the announcement that we are being visited would seem to be welcomed by most.

Of course, there are still ramifications that might impact the potential reaction. Assuming ET has a the technology to develop a free or renewable energy system to take them from star to star in record time, how would our energy industry react? Would they come to believe that their businesses will suffer if it was known that our primary means of travel was, essentially, old fashioned or obsolete?

Such a situation might also apply, of course, if the industry was keeping more advanced propulsion systems secret, and only releasing the barest details over the years to stay in business and rack up huge profits. Indeed, if they knew ET and its superior bags of tricks were among us, perhaps they’d like to call a meeting and get the exclusive rights to market that technology on Earth.

Of course if ET doesn’t have a money system in the way we employ to acquire goods and services, all bets are off. Maybe the potential threat to industry profit margins will be too dangerous — too hot — to handle.

When it comes to organized religion, how can one believe that humans are the superior species if we knew there are other intelligent beings out there that may not all be humanoid? And even if most are, that doesn’t mean they would embrace our religions or anything similar. Or any religion at all.

Indeed, if they are powerful enough, they might regard themselves as akin to what we consider gods.

I think of an early Star Trek episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” first aired on September 22, 1966. In that episode, a voyage to the edge of the galaxy in search of a lost ship results in two crew members developing extraordinary abilities. They also have difficulty embracing them without trying to take over the Enterprise.

In one telltale scene, one of those crew members subdues Captain Kirk and makes his demand. “Pray to me,” he says. Of course it was all resolved by the end of the episode.

So in that situation, normal humans unexpectedly acquired advanced abilities and just didn’t have the maturity to manage them in a safe and respectful manner. An alien race that can control matter may not face difficulties in handling such abilities if it didn’t happen until they were ready. Perhaps it is the natural evolution of intelligent beings after a few million years or so.

Now if ET was here in so-called Biblical times, perhaps they did intervene in some ways to influence human culture. Maybe they engaged in some fancy genetic engineering, and we are the end result more or less. They did not have a non-interference “prime directive” about how to deal with the primitives. So there you have ancient astronauts.

If our true history was known by religious leaders, they might prefer to conceal that truth so that their “flock” would continue to attend church and participate in the appropriate events.

In short, the energy industries and many Earth religions might not want disclosure.

Certainly this might be as true for governments. Knowing that there are advanced beings out there with technology hundreds or thousands of years ahead of ours could create potential threats to national security. The public cannot know the truth.

All of this — and other factors I’m sure we can all think about — would create the huge incentive to hide the truth. Sure, small numbers of people would know by dint of personal experiences or research. But it wouldn’t be enough to have very much of an impact on Earth societies.

But if disclosure was done gradually, taking years or decades to implement, it would happen in a subtle fashion that gave people enough time to digest the state of affairs. Energy producers may be working on the requisite deals to profit, religious dogma will simply embrace the truth that we are all god’s creatures regardless of what planet we are from.

As to matters of national security, that would depend. If ET wanted to share its technology, they might not wish to have any particular government dominate. They might, instead, require that representatives of all the major governing bodies work out a deal with them to advance the human condition.

Or they might be greedy SOBs who want to exploit Earth as a potential source of profit and/or dominance. Just because ET seems warm and fuzzy, at least according to most people who claim to have interacted with advanced intelligences, doesn’t mean they aren’t consummate liars.

We could, after all, be lulled into a sense of security that makes us all the more susceptible to a takeover. Or to regard us as something akin to cattle for you know what.

One theory you’ve heard about even suggests that ET is impregnating humans to create a hybrid race. They would seem to be just like us, but they would be tasked with advancing an alien agenda to quietly infiltrate society and take us over.

We’d therefore awaken one day to find that we are no longer in control of our own affairs. Well, as if we are in control of very much now. Maybe ET’s dominance would be a good thing.

Or maybe, all things considered, disclosure of the truth behind the presence of UFOs on Earth is something we really don’t want or need.

Then again, there may be no evil intent involved, no effort to interfere with our affairs, no intent to hurt our civilization in any way. Thus disclosure could occur — and we’d barely notice.

Some suggest that disclosure has already happened.
