A report released today shows the U.S. lost 524,000 jobs in December, bringing 2008's total job loss to 2.6 million, CNNMoney reports. Last year's steep drop in employment marked the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945. According to the Labor Department, the unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent last month from 6.7 percent in November.

Next time you feel the urge to be Patronising be sure not to look when crossing a busy road !

I wasn't being patronizing. I was being honest.

The notion of two and a half million jobs disappearing is laughable. They didn't disappear, they just went from one country to another.

by 2050 the population will have gone from 6 plus billion to 9 plus billion........and with increased mechanisation of manufacturing and construction........

are they really disappearing ? or are we just oversupplying the market ?

One would think that more people, would mean more opportunity. When there's more people, there's more customers essentially.

Unless all the births are coming from the third world, which of course would not create customers, but dependents.

thats right some people are customers ie earning money, and some are not. depending on individual circumstance.

if you go to any country town you'll usually find high rates of unemployment, there just are not any jobs for locals, and often sucessive generations are forced to head into the big smoke ,the citys to find work.

all those extra people dont average out as customers, they average out as dependants and often have to move to find work

the dynamic you see in these small towns is a microcosm of the greater global situation.

advances in farm/factory machines have reduced the need for human labour.
back in the 80's i watched the installation of a HP series 3000 mainframe, clear an entire office floor of 20 accountants........

more and more the machines are doing the "work", yet we continue to breed up like there is no tomorrow.........

i think its just as likely the arnie would in a flash of light appear naked on your front lawn, but they do change the equation a little.
but then so did the motor car..............
