5th grader threatens to kill classmates

Free episodes:

I have to wonder if there was no weapon involved what exactly was it that the girl tried to stab her classmate with?

Scissors apparently:

"At one point, students said she grabbed a pair of scissors."

I wonder if there were any signs of mental or behavioral problems before the incident? Seems like this sort of thing usually gets ignored until it escalates.

To be honest I was being sarcastic the report didn't make it clear but the girl did try to attack another clasdmate a pair of scissors ( why do we call them a pair?) BUT that part was initially left out by the authorities intentionally, to lessen parents fears apparently.

For all I know they could have been safety scissors but any time one picks up another object with the intent of doing harm to another person, it's a weapon. The police have used lethal force in many cases on that principal.

As far the girls history it's a pretty recent event I'll keep my ears open on this one

one of my first thoughts on this.
I see odd behavior like this from my grade school students who are on these drugs. One is the sweetest most adorable 9 year old girl who stunned me one night during class. I had a scab rip off from my hand that I injured while working in my garage. It started bleeding quite a bit down my arm then to my wrist then dripped off my fingers, this sweet little girl came running up and held her hand under mine to catch the blood, rather than wash it off in a near by sink she sucked it off her hand and asked if she could suck on my wound until it stopped bleeding. I was shocked.. of course I said no and she got the most pathetic look on her face.. I told her to NEVER lick someone's blood and she said it was "like cotton candy" to her. I asked her mom about it and she said ever since they put her on ADD drugs she has been acting strange. I asked WHY she was on ADD drugs and was told that the school nurse suggested it because she was "fidgety". I feel kids now days are fidgety because they get no real exercise any more. When ADD drugs are making vampires out of 9 year old girls then something is wrong. I wonder if vampirism is listed as a side effect in the fine print.

They are over prescribing imo. I believe some people need it but not as many as they claim. We really should be very careful about what we give to young children who are still developing and may not be fully capable of expressing themselves. We all act a little weird or fidgety or disagreeable as we grow up - it doesn't mean we have to have drugs. That is really strange behavior, Pixelsmith. I hope her mother decided to get a second opinion. Besides that, I didn't think the school nurse was really supposed to be prescribing meds. I thought that if they felt something was wrong that they would refer the parent/guardian to have their child checked out by their physician or a mental health professional (even if she didn't write the script, it seems a bit excessive to make the recommendation when they really don't know).

It just amazes me how they throw prescriptions around. I have a close family friend who died in the last couple years and we suspect it had to do with prescription pills that a doctor was handing out to her rather freely. And recently a relative of ours said how she Google diagnosed herself, thought she had ADD and told her doctor that she wanted a specific ADD medication. The doctor just gave her a prescription without doing anything else, essentially going by what she - the untrained patient - said. Needless to say it didn't help her - because she didn't have ADD. Is it just a desire to make more money for pharmaceutical companies or have medical professionals gotten lazy (not saying they all have, I know there are many hardworking medical professionals out there who deserve recognition for what they do)?

The school nurse did in fact suggest she see a doctor who then prescribed the drugs. I do not believe she needs to be on them. I believe she and her classmates need to climb trees, build forts, follow the creek, hike in the woods ride their bicycles, etc etc.. to calm their fidgetiness.

Ah, ok. I see nothing wrong with a nurse suggesting that a child see a doctor if they feel something is amiss. And I completely agree. That is the best way to work out energy.

A good example, since I'm a dog person, would be to take an active dog and pen him up. If he doesn't get the exercise he needs, he will bark, chew furniture and destroy belongings. He might even hurt himself as he grows more frustrated and could become snippy with people. And to look at that animal, someone passing by would immediately think "there is something seriously wrong with that dog" even though he is technically otherwise healthy.

But take the same dog and give him proper walks, play time and vigorous exercise and he will rest calmly, bark less and be less inclined to destroy out of boredom. His focus will be better when training, too. And anyone who has a dog knows that a puppy is going to act goofy and be more playful and curious because it needs to experience its surroundings.

People who don't like dogs are welcome to yell at me, but I see this as a parallel with children. Of course they are going to act out or misbehave if they aren't given proper attention and outlets for their physical and creative energy. They don't need a pill, they need to be allowed to play like a kid and grow mentally, physically and emotionally through these experiences.

this child lacked one thing...A loving family that could help this poor kid out and guide him. If the child was unstable a loving parent would have taken him out of school and given him or her the help they needed to cope..Drugs are not the answer..a loving mother and father IS the answer...

My wife has taught in public schools for over 20 years. Full blown psychosis is not confined to adults. Not these days anyway.
