Just read that, too. The marriage seems to have been allowed on the proviso that the marriage would not be consummated until the girl reached puberty. The girl was unaware she was married, and lived with her mother. What worries me about this story, is that as far as I understand it, Sharia law allows for the enforcement of conjugal rights. Would the husband have sought to enforce such rights once the girl hit puberty? Puberty can occur in very young children. In the UK, most girls hit puberty between eight and 13 years of age. The average age is 11. I doubt Saudi girls are any different.

A culture clash? I guess some could make a case for it. However, it seems that the Saudi government also finds this matter abhorrent, and wants to make the marrying of girls under the age of 18 illegal. But they face a hard fight, as Saudi judges will probably favour Sharia law over conflicting statutory law.

Just kidding. I couldn't imagine being married off that young. Then again, I'm of the mind that once you reach a certain age, you should stop marrying people.
 
An 8 year is a child, and I'll go on the record and state that any culture that is even marginally OK with parents selling off their children, is deeply depraved and psychotic. There is no reasonable argument or position that makes this OK, it's a damned good reason to castrate and sterilize people. Yeah, that's an extreme position, and it's in response to an extremely sick reality. Very sad, and totally disgusting, IMO.

To hell with accepting cultural differences. This is sick. The entire attitude of much of the Muslim world towards women is just atrocious. Pakistan basically legalized rape recently.
