Paranormal Novice
Hi! I am new to this community but have been listening to the Paracast podcast for about a year. I am a big fan of all things paranormal and have been since I was 7-8 years old as this is as far back as I can remember having "experiences". Most of these experiences are small and insignificant but experiences non the less, but more interestingly (at least to me) , they span from UFO's to ghostly happenings. Events have also happened to my parents and grandparents. Maybe I have the ability to sense "things" better than a lot of people or I'm just perceptive. I'm not sure. Anyways, I'll tell you of all of the experiences I myself have had or my parents have told me have happened with me present when I was a baby.

So the longest term experience that we have had in my family occurred in a house in Alburg, Vermont when I was a newborn. I have questioned both of my parents separately on these events and both have identical stories and my father is a very credible person as....for a lack of a better way to say it.... doesn't care enough to lie about anything like this. But some of the stories they tell are some of the usual suspects like a mass amount of dead flies in once certain room in the house (my brother's bedroom). The hallways getting very cold suddenly. Faucets turnings on and off. Missing items (particularly, McDonald's apple pies my dad would bring home from work). A couple of significant happenings here...apparently, there was a cellar bulkhead door that lead to outside. It had a latch on it I assume that would hold it shut, but I guess my father would always find this door open, letting cold air into the house. So one day during the colder months, my father decided he was going to nail this door shut using a piece of wood. He woke up cold either that night or the next morning (I forget some details) and went down to the cellar. The bulkhead door was wide open, and the board he used was placed up against the wall. I don't think my father tried nailing this door shut again.
The most significant item here is this story. The house they were renting in Alburg was fully furnished when they moved in. They moved the furniture that was there where they liked it, weather in another room or put it in storage (cellar) or whatever. I guess all was good until they were going to move out of the house and were for some reason showing the house to prospective new renters (not sure why they were doing this....maybe to help the landlord?). They left the house to meet with the people in the driveway. By the time they came back in, all of the furniture in the house was moved to the same exact spot it was in when they originally rented the house. This gave me chills when my father told me the story. My mother mirrored the story when asked later....I believe them. After they moved out alittle while later, my mother found out that a man had committed suicide in the driveway of the house some years earlier. Maybe it was this guy? He did not seem malicious by their stories....just wanted to have some fun.

A while later, my father had a house built new on the border of Swanton, and Highgate, Vermont. We found out later that this house was built on an indian burial ground (Abenaki Indians). I NEVER felt comfortable in this house. I always felt like someone was watching me. I would have very vivid dreams of aliens and floating orbs flying all around that would materialize into UFO's. To this day, I still dream about this house. My brother says he would hear chains dragging across the attic. Problem is....we did not have an attic. My brother would have very vivid dreams of "beings" looking in at us through the windows.
One night, I was at a neighbors house helping her babysit her siblings. A few hours in, we got a very weird felling....like we were creeped out. The handle of the door that lead from the kitchen to the garage started jiggling like someone was about to walk through it. We freaked out and once we calmed down alittle, opened the door. The garage door was closed and it was dark in there. Nobody had come home....nothing.

In 2011 I was vacationing in Vermont ( I live in San Diego now). I was staying at my mom's house which she thinks is haunted as well as my sister. This is located in Highgate, Vermont. I was in the guest room with my girlfriend late at night trying to shut my eyes and got a very creepy feeling that came over me. The room seemed to get MUCH darker. I opened my eyes and FELT like there was someone right above me looking down. It was one of the scariest feelings I have felt. Let it be known that I do not stay at my mom's house anymore and have not since that night. My sister who currently uses that room as her bedroom says the volume on the tv goes up and down and the radio turns on and off and the stations change.

A very small insignificant occurrence: I moved to San Diego and rented a house in Mission Valley area. I would just be in my room on the 2nd floor and every day around the same time (3-4:00pm) I would head the front door shut pretty hard and foot steps up the stairs. I had roommates so I would assume this was them most of the time, until I realized that it was never anyone doing this. I have to think...either my imagination or some sort of residual haunting. Either way, I never felt threatened and never had an issue sleeping.

I have had many ufo sightings. I have always been a sky gazer. I'm always waiting to see something flying by. In Swanton, Vermont (roughly around 1996-1998)..I was home late one night watching my sister (I was roughly 15 by this time). We lived right on Lake Champlain. I remember getting the sense to look outside. I saw a really large orange glowing sphere positioned, what looked like, directly in the center of the lake. If you know anything about Lake Champlain, you know that it is very long and narrow...running the length of Vermont. The object was there for hours it seemed. I had a hard time taking my eyes off of it. Finally, my mother came home and I rushed to show her, and the object was gone. Was it a UFO? To me it was, but was it extraterrestrial in nature? I'm not sure. I had never seen anything like it.

Around that time, and at that same home, I was standing in the road one very dark night with some friends. I heard something with a low pitched hum go directly over my head, but I did not see anything. This may have been my imagination, but I know I felt very odd about it.

Again, around that time, maybe a year or two later....I was on my way to my friends house at night. In order to get to his house, you need to take a few dark, dirt/rock roads. I got about 3/4 of the way to his house and noticed something very bright flash over my car, like it was speeding by. Simultaneously, my car was about to die....it started sputtering and I was going roughly 30-35 mph. I panicked and stomped on the gas, and seemed to gas my way out of shutting down, then it was over. I made it to my friends house extremely freaked out....and never experienced anything like this again.

The sightings slowed down for about the next 10 years, until I moved to San Diego. Nothing overly significant but twice, about a year apart I saw an object in the sky.....it looked like a row of orbs (probably about 10-15 orbs in length) doing a serpentine motion in the sky. I saw this once over a marine base and once in Temecula, Ca around 3:00 in the morning. Around the same time (2010-2011), I saw something cruising in the sky that had an interesting light patten. It looked like it was a longer object. It had no noise, but it was a distance away. But it probably had 5-6 alternating lights on the side of it. This struck me as odd. I live next to an airport but it didn't look like anything I have seen in the sky before.

There have been some smaller sightings that looked suspicious. Like red lights going over my grand parents house in Phoenix, Az.

Thank you for reading this really long post and I hope some of you can shed some insight onto my experiences and maybe add some similar ones of your own.

Missing items (particularly, McDonald's apple pies my dad would bring home from work).
We always have food missing when we go to McDonalds, but I don't think it's paranormal. ;) I jest. Anyway, for the sake of not cramming a bunch of questions into paragraphs, I'll break my inquiries out separately below:

As far as the lights go, I think it's difficult to determine the origins since lights seem to be somewhat hit or miss. They could be ETs, could be something conventional/natural reflecting in a strange way or it could be related to your previous paranormal activity (assuming that said activity is not related in any way to ETs, which who knows, it could be).

Is there any history of the paranormal in your family? (I mean before you were born and/or related to extended family members)

It seems like this was going on at least from the time you were born and is focused on your immediate family, so I wonder if it goes back further and may be family-related. Have you ever gone through your family history to see if anything notable or traumatic ever occurred that might be related?

When you were born, was the house you lived in a 'new' one for your family (not necessarily newly built, but one that no one in your family had lived in or had any association with prior to your parents moving in - like an old family home)?

If there was no prior history of activity before you were born: Have you ever looked into the history of the first house you lived in to see if anything traumatic or notable occurred that could have brought on the initial activity?

Has anyone outside of your family shared in these experiences or mentioned their own experiences?

Does your mom and sister feel comfortable with the haunting activity?

Did your girlfriend notice anything going on that evening?

When did you learn that this home was built on an Abenaki Indian burial ground? I ask this because it's probably important to consider the fact that if you tell a child something that might sound spooky to them then their imagination might make them uneasy. And something like a tree branch scraping on siding or a window could be interpreted as maybe chains dragging. Not saying that's what happened here, just something to consider. And if you went in knowing nothing about the house and found out after the fact then I suppose that wouldn't really apply.

Did your neighbors ever mention strange activity on their property before or after the door handle incident?

Were the children being babysat present and, if so, how did they react?

A few questions regarding your parents handling of the situations:

How do/did your parents handle all this? When did they tell you about the earlier experiences and how did they view it?

Were they comfortable with it or did they relate it to a personal belief/religious belief?

Did they ever choose to move because of the activity?

I think that's everything I would like to ask. Sorry about the paranormal questionnaire! :)

Yeah, I can not explain this. It seemed weird that it was an OBVIOUS abnormality over the lake in the shape of an orange sphere. But the instant my mother got home....it seemed to disappear. Maybe a figment of my imagination? It seemed too real. I don't know?

Is there any history of the paranormal in your family? (I mean before you were born and/or related to extended family members)
There is history of the paranormal in my family. As I mentioned, the entire experience (with the apple pies) and that house, were told to me from my parents. Who.....when questioned separately (They have been divorced for most of my life) have the same exact story. If they made it up or anything like that, their stories would be told slightly differently every time....and they are not. They also tell smaller details of the story such as kitchen plates flying off shelves and the Atari playing itself for a good amount of time. My grandparents also have seen ufo's. My brother claims that he sees ghost activity. It does run in the family.

Have you ever gone through your family history to see if anything notable or traumatic ever occurred that might be related?

Did your girlfriend notice anything going on that evening?
She said the next day that she felt very uneasy in that room and she felt great sadness. We have not slept there again since.

Not to my knowledge. Some family members have died. Nothing traumatic IMO. My great grandmother died and my mom swears that she has tried to talk to her randomly and lights start turning on and off. One time the entire house lost power. And they were the only house on that street that lost it.

When you were born, was the house you lived in a 'new' one for your family (not necessarily newly built, but one that no one in your family had lived in or had any association with prior to your parents moving in - like an old family home)?
Every house we have lived in during my time with my parents was "new" to us. Never previously lived in by family members.

Has anyone outside of your family shared in these experiences or mentioned their own experiences?
Yes! The most memorable is..one night me and my mother were talking in the kitchen. She was sitting at the table looking down a long dark hall. All of a sudden she gets this really frightened look in her face. It took me a while to get out of her what she saw....but she explains it as seeing the grim reaper. She said it was a tall figure wearing what looked to be a cloak and carrying a sickle. My mother also tells me about a time she was driving with my grandmother when they saw a ufo. My grandmother came to a stop observing it. My Grandfather worked in an airport radar tower for the Air Force. He tells me of UFO sightings he has had.

Does your mom and sister feel comfortable with the haunting activity?
Yes, my mother said that many times something weird will happen. Or items will move around. Or she feels like someone is staring at her. Little bangs and knocks here and there. But she has lived there for probably 5 years now so it can't bother her too much. My sister says the same things.

When did you learn that this home was built on an Abenaki Indian burial ground?
Honestly, I learned about this probably sometime in the middle of our stay at that house. If I remember correctly, I probably lived in that house for 4-5 years. My brother may have made that story up to scare us....I don't know for sure. I just remember NEVER feeling comfortable in that house. And after all these years I will still occasionally have dreams about it. Vivid dreams with the same feeling of not being comfortable. I have lived in many many houses since and never dream about any other houses.

Did your neighbors ever mention strange activity on their property before or after the door handle incident?
I don't know. I never talked to them about it. But they did move shortly after. Most likely unrelated.

How do/did your parents handle all this? When did they tell you about the earlier experiences and how did they view it?
Were they comfortable with it or did they relate it to a personal belief/religious belief?
I think when I finally told them later on (14-15 or so) they then told me of their stories. Especially about the haunted house in Alburg. They did not mention once that it could be in my head. It was more of a story for story kind of exchange. My dates are hazy so bare with me.

Did they ever choose to move because of the activity?
No. Most of it was out of my hands. I was a kid or young teen. And I have not had anything serious since.

Thank you for your questions! I hope I did an alright job in answering them!

I started that post with "Thank you for the questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability/memory.

But for some reason it cut it off.

Thanks for the responses, I know I was kind of all over the place. :)

This type of activity makes me wonder if some people are or become attuned to a different wave length than the majority of the population is, making them prone to witnessing out of the ordinary things (or possibly attracting said things). Sort of like having senses that are trained to pick up on things that other's can't (or refuse to without realizing what they are doing). My first thought was maybe it was family related, and I suppose it could be but you have a pretty broad spectrum of things going on there. And some of those could just be misinterpretation due to the expectation that something is happening.

And I'm not saying that I think it's all mundane. It really sounds like you have some strange things going on. Have you ever considered sitting down and writing out every detail you can gather about each incident in the order that they happened (including the stories told to you by others)? It may sound pointless now but it could be of value later on if something is revealed to you or on a larger scale. I just finished saying I wish I had written down the details of my experience back when it happened in another thread, so maybe it's my regret talking. I think it might be a valuable resource to have since parents and older people don't stick around forever - or if they do it could become difficult to get a good interview out of them. ;)

Perhaps you have deceased family members that are just very involved with the family still. It sounds like your mother and sister are comfortable with it to some degree, and it sounds like no one has actually gotten hurt because of it - which is a good thing. I suspect it might be one of those things that doesn't have a straight answer (sure seems like most of this paranormal stuff heads in that direction).

I'm no expert, though. I'm sure there are many others here better suited to make suggestions about what they think could be going on. :)

I think your first suggestion is right. I do believe that some people are more attuned to the paranormal. Maybe they are born with the ability....maybe it's genetic. My friend always tells me how he looks at the sky and has never seen anything out of the ordinary and he says he really wants to see a ufo. I can seem to look in the sky for 10 minutes and see something out of the ordinary a good percentage of the time. I just think my mind is open to it and his is closed, yet he says he wants to see it. Just theorizing here.

Ya, that could be it. And I guess if we were able to pick through what was truly strange and what was just misinterpreted, then there wouldn't be any debate. lol I can't say I have ever seen a UFO, but then again I am sure I have spent many days with my head down and mind distracted.

I really wonder how much of a role modern distractions play in our ability to pick up on odd things. I could also see how another "sense" might be dulled if we allow it to atrophy like a muscle by neglecting it as we indulge our minds elsewhere.
