A weird thing just happened

Despiser of religious nuts
The strangest thing just happened to me. I took a drink from a mug, and was just lowering it to the table, when it literally shattered in my hand. Two big chunks clattered down, leaving me holding the handle and an attached shard. It didn't strike anything, had no cracks or chips, etc. It literally just shattered as it was being held in mid-air. I wouldn't consider this paranormal, but I'm a little freaked by it, all the same. Can anyone please offer me a rational, scientific explanation for this?

Stress from temperature variation? I've seen a glass that was hot from the washer shatter when filled with ice-cold water.

What was the drink? What kind of mug? How long had the drink been in the mug?

To many unknown variables.
