The scary truth is that there are many people who fundamentally do not know how the world works, and who cannot ask themselves "Is this likely?" and get a sensible answer (actually it doesn't occur to them to ask).

And they are allowed to not only reproduce, but vote and drive cars.
If we're very, very lucky some of them may be exceptionally kind and decent people, but I'm afraid the majority are just garden variety morons.

PS. It goes without saying that they can be readily persuaded that at this very moment there are Iranians tunnelling under their gardens. For example.
