I have always been kind of a techie wonk. Geeze, when I got my Galaxy SIII cell phone I was tripping for a couple of weeks. Recently I reactivated my old LG Optimus t cell phone so I could use it as another call in line on DMR and I am still tinkering around trying to get the thing to work right feeding audio into my board. So, like whats up?

When my wife upgraded her cell phone to a Galaxy SIII she had been using an HTC Wildfire S and had not been very happy with it. So we had this thing lying around and I have a buddy who was using an old flip phone and offered it to him. He is also a techie wonk and after accepting he spent a day or so researching this thing. He ended up "rooting" the phone and installing the latest version of Android to it and now is happy as a bug in a rug with his "new" Android phone. So, I got enthused and started dickering around with my Optimus phone. I ended up doing an upgrade on that software for the phone and the phone is now pretty choice! But I needed some new wallpaper for it. I went up to the Play store.

I found one of the MOST awesome backgrounds I have ever seen. What with my "spacey" background in ufos and the paranormal ... I found this thing called "Galatic Core" which is a "shot" from above of a Galaxy revolving around with all the stars and Galatic arms etc. ! The damned thing is hypnotic, I gotta keep myself from "getting lost" watching it! I just wanted to let you all know about it since if you are here you have an interest in the same stuff I do and you may love this wallpaper when you see it.

Just a heads up.

Hey Don , what LG Optimus is that , the Chic 720 ?That was my first smartphone , and it still works...

It's the LG Optimus t, the T Mobile version and since I upgraded the software it works really well. Well, except for DMR ... gotta find the right cable to import both audio and the phone mic.

I have the LG Optimus G Pro and I have been in love with it since the day I got it! It's technically called a phablet. Half phone half tablet. I love it because the screen is so large 5.5 inches and it's crystal clear. I upgraded from the Galaxy S II which my boyfriend still has and when I compare them I can't imagine how I used that phone for so long without being committed to a nut house! Thanks for the background info, I will have to check that out! :)

I downloaded it! It's pretty awesome! I am just afraid about my battery life. My phone can go about 2 days of regular use with out charging because my battery is HUGE but still, live wallpapers really suck the juice out!

i actually use it, with it on "nebula" theme i have green on the first pass, aqua(ish) on the second and red on the third pass

btw at the risk of hijacking this thread Don c/o Plasma Sound in the app store it's a theremin type app with some pretty cool graphics

Another cool app that I have on my phone is called Phases of the Moon which can also be set as a live wallpaper and changes, obviously by what phase the moon is in each day/night.

Ya well just don't space out on it like the girl who jaywalked out into traffic in front of me the other day and then stopped in the middle of the road to answer her $%@ cell phone! I dislike cell phones with a passion, don't own one, or a cordless phone, and have no plans to get one any time soon. I heard there was a recent survey where if a girl had to choose between her cell phone and her boyfriend, 70% would dump their boyfriend. Which come to think of it would probably be a good thing for him anyway because while you're out with her, 90% of the time she's off someplace else on her ^%$ cell phone anyway. It was bad enough when women had them at home bolted to the wall. Now they can take them anyplace. What were we thinking!

On the topic of hypnotic galactic simulations however:

Modeled using the physics of celestial mechanics.
1 second = millions of years. This stuff is cool for sure!

Here is the LG Optimus with the Galatic wallpaper. The thing works really well. What I did was have T Mobile put a new sim card in it then simply buy time for it. Simple and it does everything my "contract" phone does.

Okay ufology, you are what we call a LUDITE. My wifes best gal pal is a LUDITE. Swore she would NEVER buy into that cell phone BS. Well until everybody kept riding her because they could never find her when someone needed to talk. She finally broke down and bought one ... (and buy the way .. never figured out how to program a message in the answering msg. box) and then she discovered how much she did like it. Like it? Nah, she LOVED IT. Problem solved?? Nope, she promptly left it in her jeans, threw the jeans in the washing machine ... well I will leave the rest up to you.

Speaking of Galaxys......

. There are close to 400,000 galaxies in the animation, with images of the actual galaxies in these positions (or in some cases their near cousins in type) derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. Vast as this slice of the universe seems, its most distant reach is to redshift 0.1, corresponding to roughly 1.3 billion light years from Earth. SDSS Data Release 9 from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), led by Berkeley Lab scientists, includes spectroscopic data for well over half a million galaxies at redshifts up to 0.8 -- roughly 7 billion light years distant -- and over a hundred thousand quasars to redshift 3.0 and beyond.

Getting your head around the fact these are Galaxys not stars is mindblowing

that's actually a pretty good point Don, i don't know about Calgary but just try and find a working public payphone in LA, or if you have to stop on the freeway because of an emergency try walking to the nearest callbox. YIKES!

That's a funny story :) . By the way LUDITE is spelled with two letter D's, as in "luddite", so you might want to add a spell checker to all that high tech you've got going there. Plus I do outcall PC repairs, build PCs for fun, and my website looks pretty good too ( if it's not on a lousy cell phone  ), and what ... you didn't like the cool supercomputer simulation I posted? I'm the one who started the "A Science Minute" thread. I don't think the word "luddite" accurately describes me. That's just the typical defense mechanism retort of the cell phone junkie. You know there's a reason they started calling them "CrackBerrys". Although I do admit to having a penchant for classic cars, and I just picked up a set of these puppies ( Yamaha NS-670s ) the other day for my old school stereo:

They don't make 'em like this anymore !
They're picking up the rears. I've got JBL L-100s for the mains.
My amp is old school too. An old Nikko NR-1019. It totally
kicks the newer surround system I used to have to the curb.
Yup ... I've gone retro stereo too :D.

Ooo, touchy are we? :) Well, a rose by any other name ... ya know??

Like fire ,they make great slaves but poor masters.

Dont own one myself, although my wife did saddle me with one years ago, but i managed to get rid of it.

I do wonder at the sight at a local transit station or shopping mall, where a vast proportion of the people seems en-teched, interacting more closely with their digital device than they are with the environment they inhabit.

They remind me of the Borg........

Part of the inevitable merging of biological and machine

Resistance is futile :D
