Paranormal Adept
The anthrax attacks following 9/11 seem almost off the public's radar nowadays. This mystery, FBI code named "Amerithrax, must be one of the strangest whodunits in U.S. history. Some basic facts, lifted mostly from Wikipedia:
-The attacks started about 1 week after the sept 11 attacks.
-Letters containing anthrax spores were mailed from New Jersey to several news media offices and two Democratic U.S. Senators, killing five people and infecting 17 others.
-Original FBI suspect Steven Hatfill was exonerated and won a multi-million dollar court
settlement after years of intense FBI investigation and surveillance.
-In April 2005, Bruce Ivins, a Ft. Detrick scientist, came under suspicion. After years of
investigation and surveillance, Ivins reportedly committed suicde in July of 2008.
-The F.B.I. and CDC both gave permission for Iowa State University to destroy the Iowa anthrax archive, (actual germ samples). And the archive was destroyed on 2001 October 10 and 11.
-Although the FBI matched the genetic origin of the attack spores to the spores in Ivins'
flask RMR-1029 at Ft. Detrick, the spores within flask RMR-1029 did not have same silicon
chemical "fingerprint" as the spores in the attack letters.
- Analysis by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory indicated that the water used to
process the anthrax spores came from a source in the northeastern United States.
-Years after the attack, several anthrax victims reported lingering health problems
including fatigue, shortness of breath and memory loss.
Does anyone else think there might be more to the story?
