Any gamers? New Fallout 3 content "Mothership Zeta" -fun w/ alien/abduction lore

Free episodes:

Nothin' to see here
Not sure if theres many gamers on this forum, but Im constantly surprised at just how many people play games, so I wouldnt be surprised if there were a few. Non gamers should find this interesting anyway.

Fallout 3 is basically a huge free-roaming role playing game set in a post-apocalyptic America.... specifically Washington DC. You walk around the wasteland and encounter shit and essentially waste huge chunks of your real life playing this game.

The developers periodically release new content for the game. The latest new stuff is called 'Mothership Zeta'. As you walk around the wasteland its possible to find a crashed UFO with a dead alien and a kick ass gun (best in the game). After buying the new content and walking back to this crashed UFO you get sucked up and abducted by aliens. The very first scene after the screen goes black is a 1st person view from a bed with alien that look like the Roswell Autopsy thing poking needles into you.

After that you basically make your way through the ship killing aliens etc. Pretty typical. But theres some cool stuff in the dialogue occasionally indicating that the developers either mined the alien/UFO/abduction subject for ideas - or are interested themselves. At one point you unfreeze a bunch of people from cryo-chambers... all from different time periods. One of these guys you unfreeze is freaking out and talking to him he has a bunch of ideas about what "the aliens want with us".

1 idea he comes up with: "...maybe theyre responsible for life on earth. Like, they seeded the planet a really long time ago. And theyve been coming back every once in a while to check on the progress, and now they've decided don't like how it turned out."

2nd idea he comes up with: "... isnt is obvious? They're probably using us as guinea pigs, examing out anatomy. Once they've figured out how to make exact copies of us, they'll send those copies back down to earth to take our places. When they've copied enough of us, theyll turn on us and take over the world!"

3rd idea he comes up with: "... maybe they're going to take over the whole planet. Maybe they've been coming here for hundreds... no, THOUSANDS of years, waiting to hit us when we're not expecting it. And then they wipe us out, and strip the planet of all it's resources."

4th idea dude comes up with: "... what if this all just some horrible misunderstanding. Like some radio waves beamed into space, all the way to their planet. Only they didn't hear the nightly news, or whatever, to them it sounded like a declaration of war. So they decided to attack us first. This whole thing could totally be our fault!"

Anyway. Maybe some people will get a kick out of that. I know I did... playing a game and seeing UFO type shit pop us is kind of cool. Theres lot of other stuff too... I just discovered a room full of humans on operating tables.

I guess this content could be kind of freaky for genuine abductees. (assuming such a person exists)

I work in games/film so I'm very familiar with that franchise. Fallout 3 is great, but not quite as classic as Fallout 1 and 2. If you are up for an old school adventure, be sure to check em out.

I did enjoy 3 though - very fun to wander the absolutely HUGE wasteland. Enjoyed the Lamplight Caverns a lot - reminded me of the Lost Boys from Peter Pan. Will probably go back and replay it soon since I bought some of the extra content but haven't installed it yet.

Would love to see a fallout film (done right of course, which is rare thing things days) - the retro 50's aesthetic is sweet. Power armor, super-mutants, ghouls, evil cults.. what's not to love!

I have Fallout 3 and have enjoyed it so far though I haven't made much progress.
The downloadable extra content you mention Gareth sounds really good, shame we're not hooked up to the internet on the 360.

What I wanted to say is, whatever inspired the developers to put that content in, I think it's a good thing. Because it seems to me that most people who aren't that interested in the UFO topic but do play video games, might actually benefit by having their eyes and ears opened to the wider possibilities of origin and intention of our visitors. Rather than sticking to the more predictable and blinkered attitude most of society seems to accept with regard to UFO's/Aliens.

Cool, yeah I was really surprised to see these references in the game. It was quite amusing really, seeing this guy come out of cryo-freeze acting all paranoid and hugely wound up and spouting things like "maybe we were seeded by them" etc ...:D

Definitely recommended for you guys with the game.

Big time gamer over here.

I got FO 3 on release, beat it once, replayed it up to character level 20 and stopped. I was originall just gonna wait for the level increase to appear as dlc on the ps3, but I never really picked it up again, too many awesome games were coming out and I never felt the need to pick it up again. Especially when I have GOTY Oblivion, which is also made by Bethesda, and personally, I prefer running around in the forests with sword and shield in comparison to running through wastes with guns. The scenery is a bland blend of grays and browns.

Did you ever play Farcry 2? Awesome FPS.

Hey methshin,

I love Oblivion, and like you prefer the scenery, and the swords and stuff. Also I prefer the character selection and design possibilities with Oblivion.
Never played Farcry, to be honest I dont keep up with what's out there but I did just get Bioshock which is real good.

Feels a little like your'e on rails, but still awesome graphics, I love the art deco designs, and an interesting slant on biological augmentation, opening up some highly entertaining possibilities. Also some quite unique moral choices have to be made along the way.

Which incidently raises an interesting point, at least for me. Whenever I play anything like an RPG I just cannot play as a bad guy. I mean in Oblivion for instance you are given the freedom to do pretty much what you like, so you can ultimately play the whole thing as some right bastard killing and stealing whatever and wherever. Which is fine by me it's only a game after all, but I just cant play like that.
I have tried on occasion but I just get bored or so distracted that I just start again.

I've got it so bad that my character in Oblivion really does look like me. Obviously that could be viewed as being a bit narcissistic, but I just wanted to see what was possible and I just play as me.

Does anyone else do this or feel this way when playing?

Now what's Farcry all about?

Mark

I'm a newb gamer here. I'm hooked on an MMORPG (Perfect World International) which I've noticed some ads on the forums. Unfortunately a former roomie stole my Xbox and I've never bothered to replace it. (This is why I no longer rent a room out!!)

Mark FarCry 2 is a FPS set on a tropical island. You basically have free reign to go every where any any where you want. Its a true shooter whereas Fallout 3 is an RPG and is actually quite a poor shooter.

Hi All
I palyed the original Morrowind but have not tried oblivion yet.
Has anyone here tried Stalker?
It's set in and around chernobyl after the reactor melt down.
It's a very open ended world and is awsome. It looks a little dated by todays games but i think still holds up well.
Also does anyone know the miniumum system specs for left 4 dead? I have a p4 3.0 with 7800 gs card and was not sure wether i'm in the ball park or should just save my money.
Cheers John

Your confusing Farcry 2 with farcry 1 as FC2 is set in Africa FC1 is set in the tropical Islands.

Both great games. The map in far cry 2 is huge and it encompasses deserts savanahs and rainforests. Its got Awsome Visuals. The AI in both games are exception on account of the fact that your enemys actually do try to find you and are quite intelligent in their manner. They actually try to flank you from behind.

I played the mothership zeta and did enjoy it. it did breath some life into fall out 3.

Stalker was a good game though it was badly optimised in places I dont know if they rectified this with any new patches ? its definatley spooky I remember being in the bowells of some powerstation and being chased by Snorks in the dark.

I would be suprised if you could play left for dead on medium settings as your graphics card is a bit dated and left for dead is pretty recent. What bus does your motherboard support AGP or PCI-EXPRESS ?

I'm thinking about picking up the new DLC for Fallout 3, but I think I may check out the Point Lookout DLC first. I did get Broken Steel though, which was great.
Anyone with a 360 should also check out 'Splosion Man, which was released a couple of weeks ago. Fantasic 2D platformer. They should make a Sonic game like that.
Also, in a week or so, Shadow Complex comes out which I am really excited about. The developers were influenced by Super Metroid, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Anyone listen to any gaming podcasts? I've been into videogames since my ColecoVision, although since my little girl was born I haven't been able to play as much as I usually do, especially on-line with my COD and Halo buddies.

Point Lookout is EASILY the best of the DLC IMO. Seriously, cant recommend it enough.

And yeah I did mix up the first FarCry with the 2nd. Funny since I didnt play the first, yet I put many hours into and finished FarCry 2.

It's AGP which is a bummer. I suppose i'll have to wait till i can afford an upgrade, because it would need a mobo, cpu, Ram the works. Oh well, some of the older games are still great.
Cheers John.

lol, the secret to being a good guy is to not be seen being bad. I murder and steal left right and centre, but b/c my character has such high sneak skills, I never get pinned for anything. That goes for fallout, oblivion and way back to the days of Morrowind, which IMHO, is the greatest work bethesda has ever put out.

Farcry is an FPS which is completely opposite of a rail shooter. You are left to do the missions how you please, during whatever time of day you please, with whatever assortment of the various weapons you please. I highly recommend it. Check out some vids on youtube, the fire scenes are very impressive.

I have listened to the one about Bioshock. It goes into how the game evolved and is quite fun but the shows ceased in May.

"Splosion Man" sounds fun, might check it out and if you like less than serious games like me, check out Beautiful Katamari. Very simple premise, all you have to do is roll around this big sticky ball thing picking up any and I mean any old junk to satisfy your Dad who happens to be the King of the Cosmos. At the end of the challenges you are set your Katamari gets so big you wind up hoovering up the solar system and everything in it just to plug some enormous Black Hole. Absolutely insane idea I know but I found it very addictive.

I listen to the PCGamer magazine podcast at PC Gamer Podcast

It's sort of a general podcast on PC gaming since I don't play consoles and it talks about a variety of games as opposed to a World of Warcraft or Halo specific podcast etc.
