I've never served in the military. But seems like I have heard guys who have gone through or were about to tackle SERE speaking in tones of trepidation and maybe just a little fear. Perhaps I simply mis-heard or did not understand.

No, that's accurate. It was the best training I had in my 5 years. A lot of it was shocking because I was like "Holy smokes. They can actually do THAT to me? Wow."
