The first thing I thought of with your thread title was....big frigging sharks! Lo and behold it's the all time grumpy SOB of the marine world...Great whites! They scare the crap out of me and I'm about 800 miles away from the nearest one. 
It's not so much a phobia as a healthy respect for something that could eat me to death while drowning me at the same time...
My brother went to South Africa to do the great white shark and cage thing. He accurately described it as 'f***ing terrifying' when this big SOB appeared in the gloom and came at the cage he was in. His heart was pounding like a cheap Jap car full of gangbangers. Boom boom boom.
If I tried that, the 'cause of death certificate' would list incontinence, drowning, heart attack and asphyxiation through screaming like a girl. lol

Great true story and yes I have experience one up close in a small boat this white pointer was about 4 meters easily have knocked us into the water and we left in such haste it followed us back to shore. However, they are great fish and should be protected.
