Mitchell contends that the dispersal of knowledge about what he believes to be the end of Earth's apparent quarantine from other civilizations, and advancement of planetary culture beyond its present fragmentation and incoherence, are desirable results of the widest public release of information about the extraterrestrial presence he believes is real.

Is disclosure that simple ? What if the intent of these other civilizations is unknown, or it is known but has a negative outcome and against long term interests ?

Does humanity as a whole have the fortitude to process that kind of information without crashing civilization as we know it ? Where's the cost/benefit analysis :D

Good point. Not that disclosure is really imminent anyway of course.

IMO not yet but we're getting there. :)

"Crash civilization as we know it?" This kind of thing has always struck me as taking the argument too far. Civilization would not "crash" if mankind learns that other beings exist in the Universe and have inter-stellar traveling capabilities. There would be a short period of confusion and fear followed by adaptation within a month or two. Then it would be business as usual, although the media and world gov'ts would certainly spin the entire UFO subject. And lots of religious people would be urging us that the end had arrived, but their whining and crying would have very little impact.

Civilization wouldn't dissolve into chaos, but the effect would be more profound than this. Note that those in the best position to assess the impact have resorted to every trick to avoid it for 60 years plus, which surely says something.

And lots of religious people would be urging us that the end had arrived, but their whining and crying would have very little impact.

Yep, they would have little impact.

I suspect that the think tanks such as the Rand Corporation have studied this issue and concluded the effect would be profound, but I don't buy it myself. They've been wrong before. Just pick up the book "The Year 2000" and read their prognostications they made in 1970 and how wrong they were.

There's an old Buddist koan that goes something like this: "What do you do before you are enlightened? Chop wood, carry water. What do you do after you are enlightened? Chop wood, carry water." The fact is that the business of living has to keep going. There are deals to be made, agendas to be set, babies to be made, and food to be eaten. The fact is, most people are not suicidal. I suspect even extreme fundamentalism would go with the flow. I heard a Southern Baptist preacher react to the possibility by saying, "Well, it's just that we'd have more souls to save than we thought. There would be more work to do." In our culture there would be people trying to positioon themselves to make a few bucks on the deal. There would be another line of trinkets and beads to sell.

No No, we would all go back to using stone tools and break off into small groups wandering about the country side in search of berries and bison. The end of civilization I tell you!

This entire argument is moronic. I have my doubts that any fear would last longer that a week or two. Then it would be the most widely utilized vessel in marketing history.

If ets are proven to exist and have been visiting us, many people will then buy into abductions etc. The idea of humans coming in kidnapping people scares people, so would the idea of aliens doing the same. Even more so, harder to detect and fight against "aliens" than humans.

Disclosure would also prove the gov. has been lying. Think of the shift in views that occurred due to Nixon..... The ufo lies or shadiness is a much bigger deal.

Mainstream scientists will be underminded as well as many religions.Technology will be effected. Changes that occur to those avenues changes us, and many fear change.

Much more can be said on this topic.

Perhaps the whole notion of disclosure is but a mere human condition. We want answers, solutions, to know a means to an end. These are all human qualities. Humans need to further the quest for knowledge...

however

Perhaps there is nothing too disclose. When the government claims denial in UFO's perhaps it is true. Something far more different and strange may lie in the truth of the matter. Something we can even begin to imagine.

We live within our technological limits. IMHO, disclosure is the equivalent of admitting that there is somebody higher than us in the food chain. Just that fact alone is troubling for alot of people (especially control freaks).

I remember Ronald Reagan's speech about how an alien threat would unite the populations of the earth. It would definitely kill any earth centric focus and trigger efforts to control our home planet at any cost (depending on the nature of the perceived threat).

I'd love to read a book about a 'fake disclosure' where a U.S. president with the help of the CIA contends that there are aliens with weapons of mass destruction based on the far side of the moon ROFL !!!! (in order to accelerate the development of exotic space travel and weapon technologies)
