Arrival film

Went to see the new film called "Arrival", best alien themed film I have seen since contact.

Some really thought provoking concepts like the aliens understanding of time.

Not a perfect film as it submits to some clichés such as America saving the world and Russia and China leading the agression but worth a watch none the less.

Anyways, would be interested to hear thoughts from anyone else who has seen it...

Spoiler alert:
I liked the idea of Arrival where humans make the effort of communication even though a seemingly superior race technically should have already decoded our diverse languages with the help of quantum computers... and perhaps would have made their intent clear before injecting themselves in the earth's atmosphere. But then they don't need to, they can look into the future and see the outcome. The hell with quantum computers, let the humans do all the hard work... even if Abbott has to go through a dying process.

If ability to view the future (time is nonlinear) is more powerful than quantum computers then I'll assume that Abbott was going to be the predicted collateral damage necessary to save planet earth from itself (this also explains why there was no retribution from the aliens).

Don't expect a sequel to this, the predetermined job of these aliens is done.

The ultimate message of this movie: just live your life and have kids. Life is predetermined and hugely empathic heptapod creatures will show up when the time is right. Sequential logic goes out the window when dimensions can be exploited like this ;)

I didn't care for it. Sure, it was cerebral and had some good 'make ya think' moments, but it was a snoozer. It was on-pace with 2001 without all the exciting scenes. An exciting plot twist and philosophical gotch-ya which I had to explain to my wife after the movie, but ugh....it was just so slow moving I couldn't get over it.

Just my opinion, though.

Peace.

Thanks for that. I was thinking of going to see it, but now I think I'll wait for the Blu-Ray release. We did go see Dr. Strange though, and I enjoyed that. It had a bit of a different take on the super-hero genre. Also saw Blackpool which was similarly better than expected.

A handsomeluy mounted film - good CGI (possibly better seen in the movie theatre for best effect) - but I have to agree, a snoozer. It felt derivative. Reminded me of a very weak imitation of Interstellar - whose one scene of that monster wave on Miller's planet ranks as a 'real memory' for me. :)
