Arthur C. Clarke passes away

Free episodes:

Yes. I had to write something for him on my blog.

Arthur C. Clarke, 1917 - 2008

His work helped me understand the power of words, and the power of ideas.

I don’t think he would want us to carry on about him too long -- but I do think he would want us to carry on at least a little. Happy to do it, too.

If you could recommend a book by him, which one would it be??

TClaeys --

You know, even though it isn't entirely by him (there was input back from and through Kubrick that steered it along), I think 2001: a Space Odyssey captures the best of all his facets. If you've seen the movie, I'd recommend taking the book in as its own experience. They aren't exactly the same, and Clarke explains far more than the movie does.

It is a sad day indeed. I, for one, had my interest sparked by Clarke and am grateful for his contributions…I will miss thee and respect thee always…

Indeed - my recollection is, that it was the "Arthur C Clark's Mysterious World" TV series of the late 70's, early 80's, that got me interested in the paranormal.

Same here. Thats probably the same for a lot of Brits interested in the paranormal. I bet a lot of people of my age (40) remember the tv series, seeing the Baghdad batteries and things on it and going ... woahhh hang on a minute :P

I'm frankly rather astonished that there hasn't been a bigger response to this thread, though. Hello people ... ARTHUR C CLARKE has died ... hellooooo ... most of the modern world was been shaped in some way by Clarke and his writings. People who read his books helped create what we have around us now. He was quite an important figure, actually.

OR maybe I'm just putting my spin on things ... who knows?? Here in NZ, a bloke just died who once climbed a mountain ... we never stopped hearing about it for bloody weeks :D ... maybe that was more important???

schtick ... again being baffled by you earthlings

Not being a reader of fiction I have never been into Sci Fi books and have never read any Arthur C Clarke. But I might just start. When I was a kid my dad read "Rendezvous with Rama" and he used to tell me stories from it.
In all the years since I never realized that Clarke wrote that book until yesterday! I might actually read it now because I loved the story, at least how my dad related it to me back in the 70s.

I also remember reruns of his TV show. It's funny that the fact that he lived in Sri Lanka stuck out more in my head than anything else. I wonder if he spoke Sinhala.

Clarke's 3 Laws of Prediction:
  1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
  2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
  3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Clarke was a 'real' scientist - there aren't many left.

As you may have guessed, for me its Childhoods End
