It's my exact point of the illusion of democracy. I am aware that govts are often required to take decisions on behalf of the voters on matters that most people either don't understand or do not have much data on.
But, if you took a poll of Irish people and asked if they thought they should propping up failing European banks I doubt very much the answer would be 'yes'.
The people who absolutely do not seem to be suffering financially are the bankers. Anyone who has sat at the head of a bank that took stupid risks and lost, should not be allowed to work in that sector every again and I would go as far as to make it law that they pay back every single bonus they ever received. The lesson seems to be in banking that it is fine to throw away everyone else's money and you will still be ok.
If I had been at that press conference I would have loudly ask that every other journalist ask they same question about the cab driver until an answer was received. What is the point of a press conference if you cannot get an answer to the one question everyone wants answered?
I am a mild-mannered man but I have to admit that I would sleep easily having volunteered to be in a firing-squad of these bankers. Not every banker is guilty but there are many that were simply and knowingly taking part in a huge ponzi scheme and they have walked away with their big houses, no mortgage and jobs and lives intact.

aye goggs it make me angry as hell as well.
Little known fact is that the current Prim minister of New Zealand Mr John Key made his money from derivatives trading in Ireland.
As far as I am concerned he is nothing less than a criminal.
The fact of the matter is those banks should have been left to fail just like they did in Iceland who appear to be recovering very well.
Let them fail then lock the bloody criminals up.
