The profound hope that extreme technology could kick humanity into progressive orientations
A growing sense that the global village is getting stuffy
The realization that the only earthly frontier left is deep sea
The fact that National Geographic magazine is getting repetitive lol

What we should have in 2010:

A Hilton on the moon with tourists sipping pina coladas served with crushed moon ice
An observatory in a crater on the south pole of the moon
Fusion energy and an army of robotic probes scanning the solar system

What we have instead:

Religion-based wars
Growth of fundamentalism
Stephen Bassett lol
Fossil fuels and global warming

Sad to realize that 30 years after the inspiring Apollo initiative an entire life-time was spent dealing with conservative backlash and vested interests in maintaining status quo.

...Well at least there is some consolation with the fact that we can rant about this using the internet which is in fact a derivative of the Apollo effort

The whole Greer-oidish pitch that "ETs" are going to give "free-energy" (a misnomer if there ever was one) devices to us so that we can clean up the planet and claim our "inheritance in the stars" (play Star Trek theme here) is a real pipe dream. There is no evidence that I am aware of that any "encounter" has resulted in any technological revelations whatsoever. Whoever or whatever is behind the UFO phenomena has never indicated any inclination to share any real truth about themselves or share any useful information in the entire history of the phenomena. Have they? The universal space brother/alien abductor messages that contactees and abductees relate are all childlike messages of dime-store philosophy that generally distill down to "play nice and don't make a mess". How incredibly absurd is that? No new physics, no medical insights, no practical application of advanced knowledge ... nothing like that at all. It's all obfuscation and misdirection. I have no hope that ETs, CTs, or whatever you want to call them have any desire to "help" us whatsoever. It's all wrapped up in the childlike wish that someone will take care of us, wipe our butts, and let us play in yard until supper is ready.

What seems more likely to me is that whatever is behind the UFO phenomena is as self serving as humanity is and whatever they do is directed to better their lot rather than the poo flinging talking monkeys fighting over unsupportable beliefs and patches of dirt. So it seems ludicrous to think they would share anything or leave anything behind that we could hammer into another weapon. But who really knows?

That's the saddest part of the deal. We have the intellectual capacity to innovate and produce solutions that solve our issues. To wait for messianic external intellects to solve our problems is tainted in corrupted 'religious' sauce bullshit and effectively makes us slaves to superior external entities I can see why this idea would be appealing in certain parts of the U.S. lol, it is relatively consistent with christian values and does not overly disturb conservative belief systems (important if you're trying to fund a disclosure movement).

However, the door is always open to error, where a foreign entity would forget an item on a remote planet. The equivalent of 'Cortez' forgetting his gun on the shores of Panama for the Aztec or Mayans to pick-up lol.

...or there is always the possibility of external manipulation where ET's would actually orchestrate a crash in a remote area with a vehicule filled with humanly decodable items (relevant to our development stage) and observe what we build with them.

For ETs to actually give us items that readily fix our problems ,with no intellectual effort required on our part, produces second class galactic citizens... or slaves. Plenty of examples of that on this planet already !
