Seen all of them. Three other great ones are http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7300946306109319965# "All Quiet on the Western Front", apparently public Domain now, "Idi I Smotri", a russian movie that is hard to stomach, and "Talvisota - The Winter War". I think the last two were never dubbed into english, but if subtitles don't put you off, they are very well worth watching.

Thanks dyingsun,

Yes the older version is classic and what was that one set in the Eastern Front during WW2 done ?

ah, you remind me of a german movie I completely forgot with your comment. "Stalingrad", very well made and portrayed the horrors of war quite gruesome..

"Idi I Smotri" is about the carnage the Wehrmacht caused when they invaded Russia (and some scenes are really tough to stomach..), "Talvisota" is about the finnish winter war against the invading russians.

Yes dyingsun,
That's the one and just thinking about German troops at 'Stalingrad' and the true story about crosses on the pavements in some German villages and on the Eastern Front aganist Vampires during WW2. Have you ever herd about this from veterans?

Well, I had one surviving (later) grandfather in my family that came back from a russian Gulag about four years after WW2 was officially declared over, from my grandmas side..she had 7 brothers (not kidding, wish I was) that all died on the eastern front. My Grandfather died when I was 6, so I sadly never got to ask him.My Grandmother never would talk about it.

Worst has to be 'Pearl Harbor', by the way. ;)

My uncles were stationed in Germany for many tours during the Cold War and saw the crosses in the German Villages and a well known former WW2 Panzer General was very good friends with them and told of this story.

I don't speak Russian, but I think "Idi I Smotri" translates into English as "Come and See". It was screened in the UK with the original Russian soundtrack and English subtitles. I've seen it about three times over the years and it's very good, but pretty bleak. I think it probably captures the bitterness of the war of extermination on the Eastern Front 1941-45 very well, and is not easy viewing - especially the long, detailed set-piece of the Einsatzgruppe destroying the Russian village and burning all the people in the church.

My absolute number one war film of all time would be Terrence Malick's 1998 masterpiece "The Thin Red Line" - mostly because of its outstanding psycho-spiritual content best personified by Private Witt, played by James Caviezel. All the ensemble cast are outstanding. It has an interesting history (and, I just discovered, a good & detailed Wikipedia page).

What about "Apocalypse Now"?

Good Thread.

Best:
1 -- Black Hawk Down

4 -- The Dirty Dozen
5 -- Enemy at the gates
6 -- Full Metal Jacket
7 -- The Green Berets
8 -- Pearl Harbor
9 -- The Great Escape
10 -- The Bridge on the River Kwai

Good Military Flix but not necessarily war movies:
1 -- The Green Zone

3 -- Silver Strand
4 -- The Generals Daughter
5 -- Schindler's List
6 -- Life is Beautiful
7 -- The Last Castle
8 -- Crimson Tide
9 -- Tears of the sun
10 -- Bat 21

Worst:
1 -- Starship Troopers
2 -- Rambo III
3 -- Red Scorpion (Dolph Lundgren)
4 -- Navy SEALS (with Michael Biehn and Charlie Sheen)
5 -- Delta Force (Chuck Norris)
6 -- K-19
7 -- Three Kings
8 -- Red Dawn (Come on now, lets be honest it really was crap)

Great lists, Ron!

Black Hawk Down was excellent and had me on the edge of my seat hoping those guys would all manage to get out of there and back home.

I recently saw The Hurt Locker, and that was alright, but more than a little disappointing.

My favorite war movie of all time, though, is Der Untergang. It's a different kind of war film: you won't see the kind of gore and graphic tearing apart of human bodies that you'd expect in a contemporary war film, but it's psychologically chilling. I highly recommend it. Bruno Ganz delivers a performance that is so believable, it is absolutely stunning!

"Downfall" really is amazing for Bruno Ganz' portrayal of Hitler alone, saw it in the cinema when it was first released.

Just rewatched the trailer of 'Downfall', one of the most chilling scenes is how Magda Goebbels poisons her own kids... Also, they really nailed the differrent german accents.

the cruel sea (wwii naval)

Yeah, I forgot "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" - Clint Eastwood's pair of excellent, poignant complimentary films about the Iwo Jima and Marines-raising-the-flag-on-Suribachi story. First class, definitely top ten for thoughtful, intelligent and mature treatment of the subject.

Thanks for the reminder.

Anyone seen Pekinpah's "Cross of Iron"? Opinions?

I really like Cross Of Iron, it's my favourite Peckinpah movie. It works as a straight forward war movie but I like the class conflict aspect. The end's a bit abrupt, but apparently they ran out of money.
Stalingrad's a great film. I loved Kelly's Heroes when I was a kid, and I'll still watch it if it turns up on TV, just a entertaining film.
Letters From Iwo Jima's great- I have it in a dvd pack with Flags Of Our Fathers, which I've still to watch. Wasn't there going to be a third film?
Ron, if you think Starship Troopers is the worst war film ever, you've obviously never seen the sequels!

If we're including Band of Brothers, then I would have 'The Pacific' as my favourite. In fact it is my favourite series of all time...
Honestly, in my life, I have never felt so emotional to actually shed a tear since I was 8 years old, but when i saw the last episode in this series I honestly shed a tear.
I've nearly finished reading Eugene Sledges book that it was based on, and not only is every moment in the series exactly like it was in the book, but it is the most humbling thing I have ever come across.
Any time I have something in my life that makes me feel hard done by, I just think back to those poor (but insanely brave) heroes who had to go through that hell... and man the fuck up!
