I can totally understand this and thought I noticed this phenomena for some time now, as happy as I was for gabby in the women's all around final, seeing the anguish on silver medalist Victoria Komova was heartbreaking. I think many of us would be thinking "if only I just did/didn't..." whereas it's easy to think yourself as fortunate when you think of the scores of the people who finished behind you.

what is interesting is this study took into consideration personal expectations compared to previous results i.e. whether one was a favorite to win gold or indeed even medal at all
