Billy The Kid...

An Open Minded Skeptic
Ok, as this is the place to post Conspiracy Theories and other really strange situations pertaining to history, I wanted very much to hear the various opinions on this forum about the entire controversy surrounding William H. Bonney, alias Billy The Kid.

Let's start with reviewing this newsflash first:

New Mexico governor to weigh Billy the Kid pardon - Yahoo! News

I am not going to comment on this until I hear what a majority of you have to say, as I am for the most part on the fence with all of this and feel as though by bringing it up here, where I feel it will get its just reward, that perhaps something I don't know of, or some "one" who might have a better angle on all of this, might enlighten my decision either way.

1. Do you think that Billy The Kid lived on past the supposed day Garrett shot him?
2. If so, what proof do you feel makes this so.
3. If you don't feel he survived, what proof would you feel that shows this.
4. Should he be pardoned for the crimes he supposedly committed?

As I have grown to respect the words those of you place here pertaining to a wide range of subjects, I thought I'd post a thread which has always interested me so as to find out what you all think.

Thanks.

Great thread, I fear that Billy The Kid's story is what will happen to the whole JFK story and future generations will never know the truth.
My mother once said the greatest advice she could ever leave me before she passed was that "things are rarely as they seem."

I wish I could answer one of your questions but I can't.

I remember seeing an "In Search Of" episode years ago where some guy named "Brushey Bill" claimed to be Billy the Kid in the 1940's(?). Subsequent photo analysis on him and the Kid seemed to show a remarkable similarity between the two. I'd have to really review all the information before I could give an opinion.
There was a History channel show a few months ago making a very good argument that Jesse James was not killed, and actually died in 1935. That was a good show, even with the possibility of it being wrong.

It strikes me that there's a very well-known UFO researcher who's an expert on Billy the Kid or maybe Wyatt Earp? Dick Haines and Kevin Randle call to mind, but I'm uncertain.

I've only a shallow knowledge of the period and the people, but guys like Billy the Kid were household names to English kids until well into the 1980s. Westerns must have been bought for ten to the penny and they were regularly shown on TV morning, noon and night.

Although posthumous pardons don't mean much to the pardoned (they're dead already) , I believe they are better spent on genuine miscarriages of justice. People wrongly executed or who died in prison as innocent people should be the priority for State Pardons. Billy the Kid was a violent guy even for the period, he's a romantic hero to many, but wasn't a freedom fighter or martyr. The pardon was promised and he never set foot in court to fulfil his side of the deal so technically we'd call that reneging on a deal.

Perhaps the Governor enjoys the publicity over the poll? Perhaps he's also considering further romanticising the 'Wild West' to milk some tourism dollars in a recession?

Well, unfortunately this thread didn't get as many reactions to it as I thought it would, but I am grateful to those of you who did post, and will look into the information provided accordingly.
