Paranormally Disenchanted
Blavatsky was a spiritualist who held seances and received letters from "ascended masters."

In reviewing Blavatsky's "history" I was struck by the parallels with L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Both have exaggerated personal histories and went on to create "spiritual organizations" that have influenced a lot of people based on parlor tricks.

The UFO field and Madame Blavatsky have more in common than many would like to believe. She was making contact with aliens before flying saucers were necessary. A subset of the spiritualists attached themselves to the emerging saucer scene, and they had a big impact on the developing ET theories.

As for Hubbard, I'm sure he was just following an established business model!

You are right, the spiritualist component has been with ufology from the beginning.

Are you talking about the letters she was getting in mail from "ascended masters" or were there other "manifestations" or some such claimed?

It looks like they were both talented and imaginative writers. How much each believed their own B.S. is debatable, but I think both were thinking "business model." LRHs approach was a bit different though.

Cool. Nice vids. I always thought "channeling your inner alien" (and believing or claiming it was from out there) was an invention that came with the space brothers movement of the modern UFO era. Looks like they have a "spiritual" history. But of course, if you think about it, these guys have always been speculating about the unknown and space is the ultimate unknown, and the idea that there were other worlds out there with possible inhabitants existed at least since the 1500s, when Giordano Bruno talked about the subject, and got killed because of it.

I don't know about Blavatsky, how much she really believed in the stuff she wrote, but the modern channelers often don't seem like charlatans, but more like they "talk" to some part of their subconscious, possibly a form of multiple personality. And their stuff IMO is not very likely to influence whole cranky ideologies.
