I had read the reviews about this on Amazon and am wanting to get the book. Maybe it's my inner geek coming out (again) but I find the whole topic absolutely fascinating.

If you are saying gin is a vegetable I heartily agree. 
I learned a little about this broad subject back when I was brewing beer as a hobby, but really only scratched the surface.
There is mild debate from time to time as to whether types of plant matter from which adult beverages are fermented and produced have any particular effect whatsoever on psychotropic properties of the end product. Is wine induced intoxication different than a buzz from a heavily hopped beer or from gin containing Juniper berries? I think more research is needed.
