Foolish Earthling
I heard Brad Steiger mention Psychic Vampires and was compelled to share this.
Two years ago I had the great misfortune of having to work for six months with what I can only descibe as a Psychic Vampire, although at the time I had never heard the term.
In all my travels to several different countries working with all kinds of people, I have never met anyone like this person. Every time I had to work one on one with him I felt weakened, drained, depressed, and even sometimes sick. NO ONE in that office could stand him, and there was a very high turn over rate of assistants quitting after working with him for just a few days.
Soon after I quit working there I ran across this book called "Psychic Vampires" by Joe H. Slate, PhD, and I had an "AHA" experience while reading it.
Here are a few descriptions of what Dr. Slate alledges to be how you can spot a Psychic Vampire:
1. In the work place, they often seek to control the decision making process, but exhibit few if any of the skills for competant decision making.
2. They disregard the feelings of others, yet fully expect everyone to be concerned about his/her welfare.
3. They are often pseudo-intellectuals or con-artists with a superficial charm that can be temporarily disarming.
4.They have simplistic and immature views of right and wrong, and are very quick to judge others.
5.They have serious difficulty working with others because they try to control everything including things they are not responsible for or have nothing to do with their job.
6.They react to thier own lack of integrity by intensely calling into question the integrity of others.
7. While insensitive to the misfortunes of others, they exaggerate their own misfortunes by trying to "out-suffer" anything anyone else is going through, at least verbally.
8. They seek to control or punish others, whether or not they actually have authority to do it .
9. They loudly talk about their own rights, but have no problem violating others rights as they see fit.
10. He/she will set people up to fail at a task (by not supplying proper materials or incorrect information, etc) just to get the chance to berate, condem, and/or rake them over the coals.
There are many other signs/symptoms/whatever and many different kinds of Psychic Vampires listed in this book, ........but to a perfect fit this was the guy I worked with!!!!!
Now, I do not know if he really was sucking out the life energy of others, but it sure FELT that way.
Or maybe it was just the psychological impact of working with such a nasty person.
Either way, I hope to God I never have to work with anyone like that again!!!!
