Welcome to western North Carolina! I live an hour away from Brown mountain, and have been there several times. Are you in the area for the highland games?
Here's a good link to find the best observing spot. There's actually an overlook right on the road with several parking spots.

Thanks guys, I've just come back to our B&B. We found the overlook really easily. It's a great vantage point. For anyone that wants to know it's on highway 181 northbound from Morgantown, just after mile marker 21. We didn't catch anything but I'm hear for over a week yet. Might go up and spend the night.
