Its a magnetic tape, and so, no, i cant get what is recorded on it, all i know is that it should be data from a satallite above madagascar, around the time printed on the casing, around the 12-1967, apart from that and the inner casing details, thats all i know!!! No idea of launch date or launch location.

Not sure where you live, but if you're located around any metropolitan areas there is usually at least one AV shop that likely has a machine that will play it and will transfer it to another medium.

I'm sure thats the case, however, with all the data printed on the casing and inner tape reel, i'm much more interested in the origins of the tape/mission, rather than the contents of the tape! A simple internet search of nasa missions shows nothing with this mission id., thats where i would like to look, rather than the contents!!!

Many thanks if anyone can help!

I don't think that all data about every mission NASA undertakes is released to the general public, especially when it might involve something like a defense or spy satellite. That may be the reason why you can't find the mission ID. I would do as Starise suggested and find out what is on the tape itself and that would most likely give you some details which you could then use to track down its origins. I have to ask, is there supposed to be something anomalous about that particular tape or are you just interested in general NASA memorabilia? Good luck and please let us know if and when you figure it out.

No, i am in no way suggesting that this is anomalous in any way, i think this is just from a routine nasa launch from that era (spy launch or otherwise) , however, i would love to know the date of launch e.t.c, for my own gratification! Being an avid collector from that period i just hope someone can point me in the right direction, without raising red flags!!

Again, many thanks.

No problem, again I have to suggest following Starise's advice, if that tape was used for data collection on this particular launch or mission or whatever, I find it highly unlikely that there wouldn't be things like dates, times and possibly even coordinates on the tape itself. Might be the only way to truly find out what exactly it is, and again I wish you luck with it.

Many thanks Muadib for your advice, I will try to get the tape itself read. I'll keep everyone informed as to how it all pans out !!! In the meantime if anyone has any advise, i'd love to hear it!!

I wonder if you couldn't find an older magnetic tape reader on the cheap somewhere, that way you wouldn't have to put it in another persons hands and you probably wouldn't attract any attention. I dunno, just a thought and you're welcome. Good luck and keep us posted.

I live in london, England, Muadib, and i know of just the place to take the tape, however, i feel it will just be encoded (late 60's) infomation, that means nothing to the average layman, like i say, i dont think the infomation on the tape is relevant, i just have a hard time thinking there is NO reference to this mission/tape on the internet, unless i am looking in the wrong places.

It wouldn't strike me as odd that there's no information on it, provided it was something to do with either formerly or still classified material or if the date of the mission was well before the creation of the internet, which looking at the tape it seems to be, and if it was relatively unimportant. Most government agencies aren't exactly known for the accuracy of their record keeping. Everyone loves a good mystery and this has me intrigued, I hope you find some answers and share it with the rest of us.

I would say there is no such thing as a routine mission! They costed so much, the payloads were always important, either scientifically, financially or in security terms. If that is a genuine tape and you are having trouble finding out more about it, it makes sense to find out what's on it. You could have all the info you are after already in your hands if you take time to get it off the tape.

So what Starise/Gene suggest and google your local area with the type of machine that plays those tapes. Guaranteed there is someone who will copy the contents onto disc/usb drive etc. It could be nothing and it could be incredible - but you need to find out!

Oh and no doubt even if it is just run of the mill stuff, I am sure there will be some space/NASA buff who would love to get their hands on such an item: KER-CHING!!

Ker-ching indeed Goggs :) By routine i only meant that i am sure there is no 'alien autopsy footage from an un-named cameraman' on the tape.
I am going to try and get the tape read at the weekend, a small audio/visual shop in south london proudly states he can read any recorded medium.. We will see,
i'll be sure to keep you all informed of my progress on this, many thanks all for your help!!
