The physical shape of single carbon nanotubes has been outlined before, using similar techniques - but the new method even shows up chemical bonds.
Understanding structure on this scale could help in the design of many things on the molecular scale, particularly electronics or even drugs.
The IBM researchers report their findings in the journal Science.
<!-- E SF -->It is the same group that in July reported the feat of measuring the charge on a single atom.

Amazing to see with your eyes what has always been described by theory :) This is the main difference between science and faith... eventually (with time) you can visually demonstrate your ideas or concepts describing reality.

Never thought I'd see a picture of chemical bonds in my lifetime ;)

Looks like a fuzzy UFO pic to me :D

Seriously, it this a real "photograph" or a computer generated visual representation of the chemical bond? Fascinating!

bonds?? the sharing of electrons as applied by conventional theory -

it seems to be what we are seeing is the electron probability density cloud between atoms possibly due to the speed at which they are travelling -

Does back up MO theory or Hybridization theory, which is mainly a particle theory.

Or would Quantum Chemistry state the electrons are partially in a wave state given there mass?
