Paranormal Novice
I grew up in a suburb south of Portand, Oregon, with 4 siblings. During a summer night (1968) my parents had gone to visit some relatives for the evening, leaving the five kids alone. I was the youngest at 11. The oldest was 18.

My brother (Don) and I were going to spy on my older sister and her boyfriend as we suspected they were "making out" in his parked car. We were going to be classic pain-in-the-ass little brothers. It was nearing the end of dusk, about 9:30 pm. We grabbed my dad's flashlight and ran through some trees onto what we called the upper parking lot of a papermill that we lived adjacent to. Looking over the eastern horizon, we noticed a bright (2-3 times brighter then Venus) white light heading north, about 5 degrees above the horizon and approximately 1-2 miles away. We both said "UFO" and laughed. Then Don said he was going to flash the light beam at the object, which he did just as I said "no, don't". The light immediately stopped and flared to about half the size of a full moon. It then appeared to head in our direction. I don't remember what we said, but we were both terrified. We ran back to the house in a panic and called my parents who came home in about a half hour. That was the last that we saw of this object.

My sister returned to the house in an hour. She told us that she saw what sounded like the same object as my brother and I had, near power lines above the papermill. Later, she and her boyfriend saw a "white face" in the bushes near where she and her boyfriend were kissing. They hurried home to share their story and were both pretty shook up, which didn't help the younger kids.

The boyfriend left and my dad went to work the graveyard shift at the papermill. Since we were all scared, of the 5 kids, 4 of us slept in my parents downstairs bedroom, especially since my dad was gone. The middle sibling had gone to bed uptairs before all of this occurred.

As the youngest, I slept in the bed with my mom and the other three kids slept on the floor. I woke up sometime in the middle of the night. I don't know why I woke up, but I do know I was awake. The next thing I know, the room ignited with light without an obvious source while simoultaneously there was a very loud, low frequency hum that shook the house. There were two windows, but they had closed metal blinds. The light and sound lasted for 5-10 seconds, and both decreased until it was dark and quiet. After a few moments, I called out to my mom in a hesitant voice, and everyone else. No one answered. I covered my head, scared and eventually drifted off to sleep.

Any chance the first light you and your brother saw was a helicopter or small plane, maybe with a spotlight or landing light? One night a few years ago I was out on the street with my dog and we got lit up by a police helicopter. I guess something had happened in our area and they were flying around looking for anything suspicious. But I don't even know if the police used helicopters back in the 60s, and anyway you would have heard the sound.

The incident at your house sounds totally bizarre. Not a clue what that could have been...

Hey NTS. Very unlikely that it was a light from an aircraft. The likely distance from the aircraft and the size of the light didn't jive. I've spent 100s of hours in and around Huey's in later years while in the USAF, not to mention lots of hours on and around active flightlines. I think the light we saw over the horizon and the one I saw in the bedroom were somehow related. I see aerial objects all the time that I can't identify. I likely would not have mentioned this one, but that in combination with the bedroom light was what I think was remarkable.

Thanks for your reply. It's appreciated.
