Chinese lanterns

I saw two weird things last night. My friend was convinced thay were chinese lanterns. I don't know. Is there anyone who could give me a decription of chinese lanterns, how they travel across the sky, what the defining features of them are, etc. I just want to know if what I saw descibes the facts, because it was pretty weird....

Hi Conor I was out in the countryside here in the UK a few weeks ago near Weymouth. I'm not used to seeing how amazing the sky looks without all the usual light polution you get in the city so I was really having a good look up at the sky.

I saw what I think were chinese lanterns rising up from the horizon at regular intervals. They were an orangey colour moving at a fairly steady pace and then the light faded and blinked out after about 4 or 5 minutes. The only thing that I thought was strange was that when I was making my way back about three hours later they were still going up. I still think that more than likely they were lanterns.

They are usually appear as orange lights in the sky. It could fool people if your looking at it from a distance away.

I saw one on the 4th of July. At least I'm pretty positive. It just kinda slowly sailed across the sky above some buildings before we watched the fireworks. My wife was like "what is that?". I told her it was probably a chinese lantern. She hadn't even heard of them, so I think people that have no knowledge of them tend to be more susceptible to providing other alternatives of what was seen.

I mean, they seem to hover, then speed up a little , then slow down some. They can move rather fast or slow depending on the wind. The one I saw didn't extinguish while I was watching, it just continued to drift in a certain direction until it was no longer visible. Just like in the video.
