Allegations of the cover-up emerged when the man, from Leicester, wrote to the government in 1999 seeking to find out more about the incident.
He described how his grandfather, who served with the RAF in the war, was present when Churchill and US General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter.

The man, who is not named in the files, said Churchill was reported to have exclaimed: 'This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population and destroy one's belief in the church.'

I don't buy that story. For one thing, Good's Above Top Secret portrayed Churchill as out of the loop regarding UFOs. As late as 1952, he made inquiries, ad was fed the standard "misinterpretation of natural phenomena" etc line. Also, had there been a clear indication of ETs in WWII, the specter of possible alien attack migtve led to a truce.

I don't get it ?!... the rest of the population gets a quack label when they show interest in the subject and discuss it in public ?

I blame the press, fundamentalist religious organizations, the military and governments for denigrading and manipulating the masses. (Fife Symington, Will H. Blanchard..)

I don't think he really initiated the coverup. As Good's book suggests, he was out of the loop as late as '52.

Sure, there wasn't much of a phenomeon before '47, and AFAIK it was only then that policy was made.

Clinton and ufos

One short trivia note - by the way that Clinton clip is not complete version. That one is taken from History Channel series UFO files from the episode "UFOs and the White House" and it is cuted in half. I was able to get complete clip after the 2-year search.
