CNN Ring Shaped UFO Story

So, wouldn't it, like, be super easy to determine if it was smoke or not?

I'm thinking it was probably smoke, but the lack of movement or expansion in the smoke ring seems odd. Then again, we didn't really see it for long enough.

Here's a longer video. That's one heck of a stable smoke-ring, if that's what it is. I can see the trees rustling in the breeze.

Well, if it was a smoke-ring, it seems to be trapped in suspension somehow and very stable. One half of it even seems to be partly within the cloud. The various dynamics of the cloud, you would think, would disrupt any strange thermal suspension effects. To all appearances, it is just hovering there. Presumably, a "smoke" ring would bring with it its own thermal properties.

If it was some sort of odd optical projection, you would think that the field it was projecting to would also be a thermal effect. And if so, why would it extend into the nearby cloud? You would think it would be wholly inside of or outside of the cloud.

A ring of helium balloons, strung together, might maintain itself as a stable ring briefly and appear solid from a distance (like a crop circle in the sky). But the trick would not hold together for very long. People would quickly notice the shape distort.

Have other people -- unrelated to the videographer -- confirmed seeing the same thing?

it almost seems as though the clouds are moving to the left whereas the ring is moving slightly to the right, though very slowly if at all. Also, it looks like there is a lower and a higher cloud ceiling, making it hard to tell if it is in the clouds, above, or below.

Here's a photo from 1957 of a similar thing.
There seems to be a small spherical object below it, too.

Maybe it's their "stargate"?

Seriously -- and of course this is speculating up a dark alley -- but what would a ring-shaped flying structure be used for (in practical terms)? (Unless, of course, you're a large, tubular-shaped alien.)

Scanning? Really something like a "gate" or port?

It was most definetly a smoke ring. There is a ride in the park called Volcano. Just do a quick youtube search for volcanoes and smoke rings...I had never realized that actual volcanoes blow real smoke rings. Very cool stuff!

there is a big difference in the appearance from those videos and the one from that park.

Those tricky suckers...fly a ring-shaped craft to a place where a park has a smoke-ring belching volcano, and turn off the cloaking device for a couple of minutes.

Not sure what to think now. I think it actually looks very similar to the volcano vid, apart from the fact that the original ring at the theme park seems to be sitting completely still with no disturbance from any direction.

I would like to hear more witness testimony...how long did it last? how did it go away? etc...

In my mind it's just smoke.
