Cold War Movies

Free episodes:

Hi folks just reading the natural disaters thread and thought about the classic Cold War movies such as

Red Dawn (maybe one day rather outside force instead?)
Hunt for Red October

Hey, blowfish, how about seven days in may? Weren't Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas in that one? Great flick. Kim

Realized I was probably showing my age by mentioning seven days in may! A real classic, though, and timeless. Kim

Couple of cold war movies I liked: The Lives Of Others, Ice Station Zebra - I can't remember off the top of my head the full title but it had Kevin Cosner... 13 Days? Dr Stangelove that must be on the list surely?

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is great. Any of the Harry Palmer movies with Michael Caine, like Ipcress File or the mad Ken Russell directed Billion Dollar Brain are really good. Three Days of the Condor is one of the best Redford movies, and you could do a lot worse than take a look at the recent Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy. Tons of great cold war flicks, and even more entertainingly sucky ones.

I'd also be amiss if I didn't mention my two favorite Bond films, From Russia With Love and For Your Eyes Only.

He starred in it. But the "candidate" was Laurence Harvey. The evil oriental brain washing expert was Khigh Dhiegh, who also played Wo Fat in the original "Hawaii 5-0."

And Dhiegh was a frequent guest on the original paranormal-oriented radio show hosted by Long John Nebel.

And that's not a conspiracy theory.

How could we have overlooked "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers?" ok so it's not a straight out cold war movie but the paranoia regarding communism is clear as day.....

'The Day After' and 'Threads' which were both nuclear holocaust movies, the first being American and the second British.

It is probably difficult for young people these days to understand just how real the threat of nuclear war seemed as recent as the 80's. I say seemed because we now know more than ever that both sides were just as scared as eachother and no-one wanted such a thing to happen.

There were many facets to the cold war but I feel the nuclear question is the part that marked the cold war out from any previous time of inter-nation tension.
