Could an Atheist ever become president??

In light of the recent presidential race, I've often wondered about this question. Both candidates are Christian. At least that is what they say. And we know about Palin. But does anyone think that an atheist could ever become president, or does every future candidate have to play the game of "being religious"??

It's just very curious the way Kucinich was blasted out of the water because he said he saw something weird. And at the same time I hear Rush Limbaugh talking about how he KNOWS Jesus Christ. So one guy gets laughed off stage, and the other is hearkened as some genius political analyst. And the idea that he knows Jesus and talks with him on a daily basis is looked at as honorable and respectable, but not crazy. SOMETHING DOES NOT COMPUTE.

I highly doubt it. Presidential barriers will probably come down in the following order, if at all: non-white (check!), woman, non-christian (but still religious), gay and finally non-religious (possibly agnostic).

The crazy christian parts of America are noth too christian and too crazy to let it happen in any other way I think.

Maybe 5000 years from now.

Seen that Doyle lady campaign ad about her opponent? Godless this, and godless that. It actually backfired on her. Stupid bich.

Puts me in mind of that Simpsons episode when Bart and Lisa stumble into a meeting of gay republicans:

Guy- Here, have a bumper sticker!

Lisa- "A gay president in 2084"?

Guy- ... we're realistic...

Aaron, they've used political commercials like that in Alabama for a long time. Senseless and a waste of money.

There was a time that I thought it would be around 2020 before a person of color would be elected President, 2030 before a woman would be elected and 2050 before a non-Christian would be elected. I think we may see it before 2050 now, but it's still a long way off.

It's entirely possible that we've already had one and just didn't know it.

Thats the one were they are chasing maggies balloon right?

Yep.

1st guy: We need a symbol. Something that says we're gay AND republican...

(pink elephant balloon floats in through window)

2nd guy: Hmmm..... a bit on-the-nose, don'tcha think?

Whoopie Goldberg for President 2012 (the worlds gonna end anyway so it doesnt matter).

I'm disinclined to believe the end-of-the-world-2012 thing but if the republicans actually DO run Sarah Palin as their presidential nominee, I'll reconsider, I can think of no more blatant harbinger of armaggedon than that woman assuming power.

I think it is obvious - as we have recently seen - the answer is Yes!!

Anybody can become head butler as long as you don't drop the tray too much.

For the sake of American democracy, I hope so.
I'm a Christian myself (Catholic variety) or at least try to be, but I firmly believe that the state must make no assumptions about the beliefs (or lack of them) of its citizens.
This is not only a clear matter of human rights and justice, but also mutual self-interest: one of the many bitter lessons of the wars of religion that almost destroyed Western Europe is that our right to believe what we want is only guaranteed by everybody's right to believe (or disbelieve) what they want.
Lastly, it's unbelievably toxic (not to mention insulting) when it's implied that there's something wrong with a candidate being an atheist, as if Christians (or other believers) have a monopoly on virtue - which um, well, er...I don't even need to invoke history in relation to that question, do I?

Yes America could have a Atheist as president when the World discovers the Bible and koran are just storys and notting else. Yes a creator is possible?, but the fundamental rubbish spewed by holy books is notting more and notting less the gaining control over the masses, no good will come of it, The worlds past and present history has shown that.

Well humans are ignorant, throw away one faith, and time will bring forth another. So we could have a Atheist president in the future, but if the people are adopting to a new faith, since the old one those not work anymore, by heck the new president better get with the program our he or she will be thrown to the wayside.
HUMANS LOL WILL WE EVER LEARN.
