Dementia cases worldwide will triple by 2050, says WHO

[Back in 1999-2000 I proposed that we would see a dramatic increase in dementia cases as a result of misdiagnosis of Cruetzfeld-Jacobs (mad-human) disease as Alzheimer's or the generic "dementia" diagnosis. Dementia deaths are not usually cause for an autopsy, so it stands to reason that many of these mad-human deaths could well be misidentified by the medical establishment. Transmissible Spongeform Encephalopathy (TSE) caused by the onset of misfolded proteins called "prions" can incubate for up to 40 years before the onset of full-blown symptoms. ---chris]

Cases of dementia - and the heavy social and financial burdens associated with them - will soar in the coming decades as life expectancy and medical care improve in poorer countries, the World Health Organisation says.

Some 35.6 million people were living with dementia in 2010, but that figure is set to double to 65.7 million by 2030, the United Nations health agency said in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2050, it expects dementia cases to triple to 115.4 million.

"The numbers are already large and are increasing rather rapidly," said Dr Shekhar Saxena, the head of WHO's mental health division. Most dementia patients are cared for by relatives who shoulder the bulk of the current estimated annual cost of £380 billion. And the financial burden is expected to rise even faster than the number of cases, WHO said in its first substantial report on the issue.

"The catastrophic cost drives millions of households below the poverty line," warned the agency's director-general, Margaret Chan. Dementia, a brain illness that affects memory, behaviour and the ability to perform even common tasks, affects mostly older people. About 70% of cases are believed to be caused by Alzheimer's.

In the last few decades, dementia has become a major public health issue in rich countries. But with populations in poor and middle-income countries projected to grow and age rapidly over the coming decades, WHO appealed for greater public awareness and better support programmes everywhere.

The share of cases in poor and middle-income countries is expected to rise from just under 60% today, to over 70% by 2050. So far, only eight countries - including Britain, France and Japan - have national programmes to address dementia, WHO said. Several others, such as the United States, have plans at the state level.

While the report shies away from making specific recommendations to policy makers, it does urge them to address the challenges of dementia as soon as possible.

As the article mentions though, it does also stand to reason that as the populations of the world are aging, it also makes sense that cases of dementia will rise proportionally. Your claim can only really be substantiated if WHO can convince the nations that autopsies should be conducted in all cases of dementia to determine the exact type.

It's interesting that the article says that 70% are believed to be caused by Alzheimer's, so that sounds like a guess as well. How do they actually tell the difference?

PINK SLIME Or it would get my vote for something very harmful. I do not know about that fat thats in it but I do not want to ingest ammonia.

On the other end of the spectrum, from what I understand, autism rates are also increasing but apparently it just comes down to better diagnosis standards

These stats are for real. The epidemic of type II diabetes is another one. Imagine future archaeologists chalking up our extinction to ignorance of the dangers of artificial foods and emf smog.

Gene I have never seen the TV series Touch so I can't comment.
Angelo, please tell me how wrong it is and point me to what causes autism.

in some areas more than 30 (THIRTY) vaccinations are given to children BEFORE the age of 3. This is just begging for problems. Odd that most autistic kids started out NORMAL.

If I knew what caused autism, I would probably be awarded a Nobel Prize.
However, I do KNOW that autism is NOT caused by vaccines. That was an idea put forth by a doctor that wanted his own formula of a vaccine to be used over the established one. He created a paper, falsly reported the data, and it was retracted.

Read this:
MMS: Error

And yes, you'll probably come back with some sort of BS comment like, "LMAO, The New England Journal of Medicine." That's on you - there is NO evidence to show that vaccines cause autism. That we can be sure of.

You really have no idea what autism is, do you? It can only really be diagnosed properly after the age of two, and even then it's usually best diagnosed in the first few years of elementary school - it's something my wife does as part of her job.

so you don't know what causes it but you do know what does not cause it? and you believe injecting mercury into an infant is good for them... wow.
