Derrick Pitts, Astronomer, Wants UFOs Studied With Science

Free episodes:

Besides Billy Cox and a couple others Lee Speigel from AOL or HP is the only mainstream reporter on UFOs. Lee does 100% ufo articles only. He would be a good guest for DMR and the Paracast.

Did you notice this article was listed in the "Weird News" column?.....*sigh*....

Along with crickets and worms on the menu, a John Holmes Halloween mask, and some girl auctioning off her virginity.

Yeah, the perfect place for a reasonable plea to science to be.

What is really needed for the scientific advancement of the study of UFOs if for someone to pony up the cash. Someone with the desire needs to write a proposal that someone will buy into. A true study of UFOs can't be done on a shoestring, in someone's spare time, or by some lone tenured professor somewhere like John Mack. We see that in the failure of the invisible college approach . The real thing would have to be an effort with a clear and expected commercial product coming out the other end.

Or perhaps what is really needed for the scientific advancement of the study of UFOs if for someone to pony up a UFO. People tend to think that if we just throw enough money at the problem we could probably solve it. Perhaps if we had some civilian version of Space Command we might be able to get some meaningful data. But even if we had the billions of dollars to create such a system, I don't think the PTB would allow us to operate it. I also used to think that perhaps we could do just as well as the PTB if we only had some serious organization and motivation on the part of all those interested in UFOs. But nowadays, even with the advent of the Internet and the prevalence of portable digital cameras, we still aren't getting any closer to solving the mystery. In fact it's getting even more confusing. Our only real hope ( and it's even a super long shot ) is to get something like what Kean is trying to do in place. There is no reason in principle that a liaison program shouldn't work, but the reality is that the PTB have a tendency to want to keep all the marbles in their own bag.

I think a scientist interested in researching UFOs would need to get a bit lucky and have a real good flap of sightings sort of drop in his/her lap during the study and then get there for some hands on work.

As an aside, I contacted Dr. Pitts directly and he told me he wouldn't personally get involved in UFO research and his interest is in using the scientific method to "eliminate ridiculous speculation about an observed phenomenon."

I tend to agree that apart from disclosure by the aliens themselves, or serious technical advancements of our own that will allow us to detect and intercept them, or possibly discover where they are from, if we are to make any further progress, luck will indeed be our only means of obtaining sufficient scientific evidence for the skeptics.

I know it's been tried before in the past, but what about seriously trying to make contact with these beings?
I have read where radio, laser and blinking lights in a sequence have been used.
If they are monitoring the internet and any form of electronic communication, perhaps we could make a good case for them to contact us.

Hey I think I've hit on something here. Why not give this a try? What's to lose? A little time and maybe some dignity?

I think I'm going to start a seperate thread to see what everyone thinks about this.
I could also start a thread for aliens to contact us here on this site. Hokey? Silly? Ooogey Boogey? I think it would be an interesting experience at the very least.

Maybe I should contact Gene and Chris first. This is after all their website.

What do you think Ufology?

Well ... that's a lot like what Greer is doing as part of his CSETI project. So we could discuss it in more detail there. Regarding an open invitation for aliens to contact us through this site. On the surface it sounds pie in the sky, but personally I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be an open invitation and I've considered doing the same thing on the USI website. However it's something that really needs to be thought through rather than just slapped up there as just another thread. Otherwise it will end up as just more noise to deal with.

Agreed. I have sent a PM to Gene explaining the proposal. I'm going to wait and see what he says first before I do anything.

And I had not heard Dr. Greer was doing something similar on the internet. Maybe they haven't contacted him yet because he makes their bullshit detector explode.

But seriously, I think this would be worth a try just to see what would happen. What could be the message? "Hi Fellow Universal Beings"....or..."Dear ET"......or ...."Mr. ET, A Nigerian Prince needs help transferring money...."(:p).

Hmmmm....hmmmm.....need to think on this. What could we say that might actually elicit some sort of response (assuming they are watching/listening)?

Oh yes, Greer is a big laser signaling proponent. I don't think it's a bad idea . . . . .

I've gone out with a little skywatch group we've gotten together a couple times and have seen things I can't easily explain. It's been a fun experience.

so some astronomer dude wants to do what now? firstly i would suggest he understands "ufos" means we dont know what it is, secondly "i think therefore aliens" is not a correct scientific hypothesis. -sigh
