I'm pretty sure it's B.S. We only have radar "images" of that asteroid, and they're not that high resolution. They're not even really images, but reconstructions. The Canadian NESS satellite is an admirable little mission, but its tiny telescope can't get any detail at all on that asteroid.

What I like about a good "hoax" - speaking as an artist and writer - is that they sometimes act like inspiration. It's a kernel of a good idea for a much larger story.
