Today while doing some web searching I came across something that I could hardly believe. Edward R. Murrow, the legendary newsman and broadcaster did a radio broadcast on "flying saucers" back in 1950. During this broadcast he also spoke with Kenneth Arnold about his historic June 24th, 1947 sighting above the Cascade Mtns. For a short trip back into time and a much more innocent age, check this out.

And the site where many historic recordings are located.

Yep that is indeed quite an amazing find. I stumbled upon the site a couple months back and was amazed that I could listen to the Kenneth Arnold interview.

I planned to go back and listen to a few more but I got side tracked. Think Ill do that now.

Great. By the way the clip was also available (at least from 2002) from Steven Kaeser's pages (researcher from FUFOR) where you can find other antological clips:

http://www.konsulting.com/audio_clips.htm

It was also recently broadcasted inside David Twichell's radio show "We are not Alone":
http://whfr.fm/podcasts/whfrforum/whfr-forum-2008_11_01_09_58_01.mp3

About Kaeser pages: There you can even find some old John Long Nebel radio shows - even one show where Arthur Clarke was a guest but I can see that the link is broken from the index page. I have the whole compilation and by the way this is a run-arround link:
http://www.konsulting.com/Nebel/
Enjoy :)
At the part 1 with Clarke arround 26th minute there is even small debate about Project Sign document "Estimate of the Situation". I am really recommending the Arthur C. Clarke show in the combination with the references in Stanton's book "Flying Saucers and Science" (pages 193-197) :)

But the primary source of the audio history of ufology is for sure Wendy Connors - author of the restoration project "FADED DISCS"...I was in contact with her few times back at the end of 90s - She was often guest on Eroll Bruce Knapp show "Strange Days Indeed" (moderator of the leading UFO list "UFO Updates"). Show "Strange Days Indeed" was at first broadcasted at canadian CFRB AM station but in the last few years is available only as a Podcast.

Unfortunately as I can see FADED DISCS pages are down :(
This was her site:
http://www.fadeddiscs.com/

One reference about her site:
http://www.ufoinfo.com/ufobooks/fadeddiscs.shtml

I can see at www.archive.org that the last working page that was recorded was at February 2008. So there you can find content that she used to have. I have one of the previous editions. I am really hoping that everything is ok with her. I will try to check up why the site is down. Here is the archived link:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080210142447/http://www.fadeddiscs.com/

Anyway I will soon get also one antological compilation as I am collecting old shows and in general radio shows/documentaries/documents for years. I have over 100 DVD's of many stuff.

Best Wishes.

I really enjoyed getting a chance to listen to the original Kenneth Arnold broadcast. It was interesting for a variety of reasons. One thing it showed is the degree of national sensation his sighting created. Much bigger than a similar sighting would generate today.

Not only were there brewing the Cold War pressures and fears of Soviet activities (or even survivalist NAZIs), but people still had a lot of confidence in the miracles of science. Let's not forget, that was the era when people read short story (fiction) weeklies at lunch break (before television sitcoms existed, or podcasts). Science fiction was in its golden age and people were getting regular doses of alien invasions.

His sighting was BIG NEWS!!!
