It seems to me that the biggest problems to get people to vote for a certain underdog candidate , underdog becouse he is against the establishment and or not part of any of the big parties, is apathy. And in my opinion this apathy is seeded in the media , but more precisely in polling data. Weeks and even months before a state makes up their mind on who they want to have as their presidential candidate the various media outlets pumps out these polling datas saying the underdog candidates got a horrible placement ie percentage of the vote. This imo makes the people , however many it may be , think that their vote doesnt matter. Now, it appears obvious to me that there is no guideline as to who they actually poll. They could litterally do their, say, Iowa polling in a area of Iowa that is known to be ultraconservative ( or litterally poll people they know to vote for say romney or ginrich ) then post it in the media as "Iowa polling data". So the people reading these would get apathetic becouse they ( falsely ) belive these polls are done "down the middle" as they say.
When you think about it there is absolutely NO reason why pre polling should be done, in fact i think its pretty obvious that it should be illigalfor the reaons stated above. It serves no democratic purpose to do pre polling.
thoughts ?
btw, im from norway so if i have missed something about how this sytem works i hope to get exused
