ET Friendly? Maybe, sort of!

There is a question often asked, in one way or another, as to how friendly(or unfriendly) is ET. To me, this is a question of evolution; not simply biological but also, and perhaps more importantly, psychological. I do not pretend to have an answer to the above question but I offer one possible scenario for a developing society.
One thing that societies of all planets would probably have in common is the problem of Environment, Resource Control and Sustainability. What would the most successful approach to this problem lead to in terms of the overall mindset and behaviour of said populations?
Looking at our own population, it very much seems that alterations in the way society operates in practical terms gives rise to, in an overall view, significant changes in people's attitudes, desires and beliefs. So what of "living in harmony with the planet"? If our planetary society is to thrive then we require an extremely radical transformation of behaviour in order to create a sustainable system to support our population at the same time as maintaining a workable balance within the Environment in general.
I am not going to suggest that successful environmentalism would result in a population of excessively affectionate lovers of the mosquito but, surely, there would be an increased sense of discipline and duty within the Universe as an Environment. If this could happen here then, maybe, it could occur somewhere else.
It could be argued that not enough is known about the possibilities of DNA and its potential to result in various brain function and psychological traits for me to assume that other populations' psychological evolution could be similar to ours. I merely suggest that chemistry is limited in its possibility although, as it happens, I have no idea of what those limitations are!(Rip me to shreds while I carry on with my bold assumptions)
I can not help but suspect that, armed with their increased sense of discipline and duty they could easily find themselves having exactly the kind of attitude to the populations of other planets, such as ours, that many of us point out that they appear to have. Namely, they seem to prefer to operate at a distance while allowing us evidence that they are around. The question is often asked, "If they can do so much snooping around, why do they not engage us in a more convincing fashion?" Perhaps it is all about environments? They have their environment, where they operate with the necessary discipline. Our environment may be seen as significantly external to theirs. Their disciplined approach could result in them regarding our environment as, simply, not theirs(and so they strictly limit the extent of their interference). At the same time, they may feel that they want us to succeed(so they decide to show themselves so that we may ponder on a bigger, more successful, picture than many on this Earth do at present.
In conclusion, in this scenario(and that's all it is), they are not particularly friendly because, otherwise, they would probably try much harder to be of assistance. However, they have not appeared, so far, to represent a worst case scenario in terms of campaigns of terror and violence(although that depends on what you believe). Personally, if they are around, I am more than mildly optimistic they do not intend to enslave us but I may have spoken too soon!

Just as humans differ, I expect aliens might as well. Some good, some bad, many in between. As Friedman has said, "Maybe not all aliens are created equal".

Humans like to paint with a broad brush though and lump everything together. See? I just did it myself.

Wasn't Hitler a vegetarian? (or is that one of those things everybody knows that isn't true?)...my only point there is that intelligent beings are capable of significant ethical disconnects.
Speculation #1: imagine if you will a planet-spanning culture that has reverence for life in all its myriad forms - on its own world. But it regards all other life as an abomination.
Speculation #2 (variation on #1): a culture that has embraced a local variation on the Gaia hypothesis, some of its people possibly even elevating it to a religion. Unfortunately for us they see all other biospheres as competitors in a life or death struggle with their own.

Such cultures could be rare as a proportion of the totality of extraterrestrial societies, but if they exist they might by their nature tend to spread.

Why do we try to judge them based on our own ethics and morality? In this huge universe, who cares what humans consider ethical. It's relative, and tied to our own brain chemistry and emotional reactions to events.
What if you have (like many suggest) a race that simply doesn't have any emotions at all, and just didn't understand when it is hurting someone, and what it means to hurt and cause discomfort.
Or what if you had a race who had an ethical code such that it considered ethical to destroy mankind and use Earth for more practical purposes (like make a giant chicken farm)...
So it's our ethics vs. their ethics.
Or beyond the alien question, is it ethical that an earthquake kills thousands of innocent people? Well the grand mind of this universe obviously felt that is an acceptable event. Yet many cursed god after that projecting their own sense of morality based on emotions.
The universe, and nature does not answer to our morality, we answer to it's.
I have trouble imagining any human thinking how it is a good thing that our race just disappears from the face of the Earth, yet one day Earth and our universe might decide just that, and so who do you listen to for ethics then, a silly race of monkeys or the grand universal plan of all things which lasted billions of years?

Or they just don't care. We are nothing more than a band of primitive talking monkeys that they don't take seriously.

Well, that would be logical if we were flesh and blood beings only, but I don't believe that's the case.

Perhaps they don't look at our bodies, perhaps they see inside, and that's why they come

And, I can assure you, based on a couple of very intense and life changing experiences, that who we are inside has nothing to do with
the body which is indeed a talking monkey. The consciousness of our true form is so far removed from this reality, that is has no reference to compare it to
in our entire lives in this reality. We humble ourselves to become monkeys, but we are not. We are something far grander and eternal.
And this is I think what they see when they look you in the eyes.

But that's just my typical BS

"Right Where It Belongs"

see the animal in his cage that you built
are you sure what side you're on?
better not look him too closely in the eye
are you sure what side of the glass you are on?

see the safety of the life you have built
everything where it belongs
feel the hollowness inside of your heart
and it's all right where it belongs

what if everything around you
isn't quite as it seems
what if all the world you think you know
is an elaborate dream?

and if you look at your reflection
is that all you want it to be?
what if you could look right through the cracks
would you find yourself - find yourself afraid to see?

what if all the world's inside of your head
just creations of your own?
your devils and your gods all the living and the dead
and you're really all alone?

you can live in this illusion
you can choose to believe
you keep looking but you can't find the woods
while you're hiding in the trees

what if everything around you
isn't quite as it seems
what if all the world you used to know
is an elaborate dream?

and if you look at your reflection
is that all you want to be?
what if you could look right through the cracks
would you find yourself - find yourself afraid to see?

what if everything around you
isn't quite as it seems

For me dreams are a part of like just like experiences when you are awake. I can still feel remorse for something I do in dreams, I can still feel sad or happy about something from a dream, if anything I feel often I learn more about myself after a long dream than anything I do during the day.

One thing, which I know is always there regardless of which reality I live in, be it dream state or not (and life itself is also a kind of dream I think) is the love of God. It is such an intense feeling when one experiences it that it melts your heart and feels so overwhelming that you can't take more than a second of it or your entire being would explode. It's what makes my dream worth dreaming.

God™ is a salami sandwich on a garlic bagel, so if that's enough to make your "entire being" explode, you're balsa wood. I can see why Tommy has ignored you, I on the other hand am always fascinated by wrecked metal chicken livers served with a steaming side of the DOG chimp salad surprise.

Well, the salami sandwich TM loves you more than you can imagine. One day everyone will return to him, and will experience that love again

Glad I didn't bother Gene with changing the typo in her name. I figured I'd give it a week or two and see if she lasted or not. I didn't think she would.

I like salami. I haven't had it in awhile though.

Thankyou for your replies.....

What they have in common point is that they remind me that, with present knowledge, it is unknowable as to how different, or similar, any Alien populations may be to ours: this I do not disagree with. However, I was hoping to provoke discussion as to the power of changes in the structure of society to influence the way people may think and behave.
In respect of this we appear, in the main, at least, to only have evidence of our behaviour and not that of any ETs. (You could include evidence as a result of the various types of supposed Alien contact but, here, I am not)

You could suggest that it is possible for higher(?) life forms to erupt which are impervious to social conditioning.

You could suggest that all higher(?) life forms are susceptible to social conditioning.

It seems to me that what determines which is true is what varieties of brains is it possible for Nature to create?

It is certainly true that humans differ, to various extents, between each other. I wonder how sensible it is to imagine a race where everybody is the same, whether all bad or all good or anything in between. I also wonder how sensible it is to imagine a technologically successful race where there is no such thing as social conditioning.

Easily said is that brain function, looking throughout the Universe, could produce beings who are astonishingly different from anything we have on Earth. While this is an open minded and cautious approach, I see no reason to believe it to be truth. (Although, being open minded and cautious, I do not discount the possibility)

So far, the most convincing evidence for technologically advanced cultures where the "nasty bad guy" syndrome is endemic lies within the sphere of science fiction. Hitler and his followers do not appear to be representative of Germans as a whole. And as for the idea of a race being endemically insular in there respect for others, I'm not sure whether such a habit would stand the test of time in the sense of progress. I hope not!

And I am not sure that I have said what I want to say in this post. And I am not attempting to argue against your suggestions but, merely, attempting to discuss.

As for people with no emotions; is that scary or might that be a good thing?

Finally, as far as caring goes, I confess I'm confused as to what it is and I'm not sure it is a very useful word within a discussion of how hostile someone might be.

YOUR TURN!

one of my pet topics for 2008, thanks for posing the question

as a species we are at a critical junction, a make or break point.

being bioforms and using sexual reproduction, we face a test , possibly the same test as has been placed on other extra terrestrial species' with similar parameters.

having used technology to short circuit natures normal checks and balances we have started to go into "locust" mode.
saw a woman on the teev the other night who had just had her 20th child, and with beaming face, explained that "children are like flowers....and you can never have too many flowers...."

http://www.optimumpopulation.org/

check out the lovely counter......

"World population is projected to rise from today's 6.8 billion to 9.2 billion by 2050.* The World Population Clock is ticking. We are rapidly destabilising our climate and destroying the natural world on which we depend for future life. "

optimum is 3 plus billion, we have 6 plus billion and are heading for 9 plus within the next 50 years...........

given we each need 4 acres of land to provide the food we eat by 2050 we will be down to 4 acres each...... that leaves nothing for the other species on this rare jewel. Nothing

none of us live within our means, there are not enough hours in the day for you to grow the food you'd need to eat, mine the coal you'd need for power and the metals youd personally need for the cars computers etcs.....

the answer is simple and thats for humanity to recognise its "locust" status and try and bring its population back to 3 billion, anything less is stealing from the bio diversity of the future. we need to "manage" our global population so that its in harmony with the biosphere, not ripping it to shreds in our mindless rush to "go forth and multiply"

why should we be given access to new planets, new real estate if we cant prove we can look after the one we have, no one in their right collective minds lets a locust species loose on the galaxy......... would you rent a house to someone who's just trashed their last rental property ?

how do we do it ?

good luck to the politician in a democratic system that runs on a 1 child policy, only in china in a dictatorship can such rules be imposed, and of course the catholic church and others would object to the idea based in the divine "go forth and multiply" command.

if i ruled the world my solution would be this, a limit of one "natural" child made the good olde fashioned way, or as many "new" children as you want using artificial insemination, the "news" would be unable to reproduce, but would if distinguishing themselfs have their genes extracted and added to the "legacy" bloodlines ,passed on according to a strict selection schedule
the "news" would be improved artificially no disease, extended lifespan, enhanced intellect, partially photosynthetic so's to reduce consumption of traditional fuel sources ie sugar

in time the planet would have a mixed population of hardy sexuals and non sexuals.
i would also move all human populations underground and leave the natural biosphere of the surface to recover and evolve unmolested.

i think until we reach this stage, where we overide our biological programming and create populations based on logical considerations, we stand at the brink of the yawning abyss that is the failure of the test

bring back the eugenics movement then. kidding!
mother earth has a way of dealing with scabs like us. we need no population control, nature will provide a solution. one good hearty blast from the yellowstone cauldron and the world population is toast. if you have been paying attention to seismic data in that area, you will see that scenario may not be too far off.
