The app is pretty sweet and, yes, you can check out Zeta Reticuli 1 and 2.

Not that I'm aware of although I don't how hard they have looked.

There is also kind of a cool feature with that app where you can look at the night sky as if you were standing on a given star or planet.

I hear SETI has listened around Zeti 1 and 2. No hits yet. They actually use that against the Betty Hill case. SETI has no evidence, yet they criticize ufology for lacking proof......

Well of course it is just a given that all alien civilizations have had high power microwave beacons running for hundreds of years because in an infinite universe of infinite unknowns what you really want to do is attract as much attention as possible.

Personally I always thought that if there were advanced alien civilizations it would be more likely that they would tend towards caution/paranoia and go to great lengths to hide their home worlds. I may be completely wrong on this point but it just strikes me that openly advertising yourself would be the galactic equivalent of a "kick-me" sign.

I do think SETI is a worthwhile venture though because just as there may be vastly advanced alien cultures out there that haven't used radio in a thousand years I don't see why there couldn't also be technologically primitive civilizations as well. I don't see any harm in looking even if we must suffer Shostak as the counterpoint on ufo tv shows.


In regards to planets around Zeta Reticuli 1 and 2 as far as I know that is still an open question.
The stars, designated ζ1 Reticuli and ζ2 Reticuli, are both yellow dwarf (main sequence) stars remarkably similar to our Sun. No close-in giant planets have been detected around either of the components, making Earth-like terrestrial planets possible. However, the stars are only 60% as enriched with metals as the Sun. Small, terrestrial planets around less metal-rich stars are less likely according to our current knowledge, though gas giant development is not impeded by this.


This wiki article is a worthwhile read as it gives a nice overview of detection methods. For the most part all the extra-solar planets we know about have been detected indirectly and it is only in the rarest and most ideal circumstances that we can visually see a physical planet.

There is an article that discusses an unconfirmed detection of a planet around Zeta 2 in September 1996. I'm not clear on who was supposed to have detected it and by what method.

Given the date that Zeta Reticuli came into the ufo lore it is kind of interesting that the question of a habitable planet there still seems to be open one.

Orbiting a red dwarf star, which has very high solar flare activity, with an 11-day orbit (which means it is probably tidally locked), makes it very unlikely that there could be any kind of habitable zone, which includes more than just being able to have liquid water (i.e., there is a HZ for electric fields, photosynthetic life, UV radiation, tidal zones, etc.).
