Rap music. Poetry of the streets. Who hears it? Not mainstream America.
MC Hammer comes along with his flashy moves and parachute pants. Suddenly rap is mainstream big time. Hammer Time. Propa'.
That gets old because it wasn't what rap was born out of. Rap is poetry of the streets not a Pepsi ad. So gangsta rap comes along and....
MC Hammer is finished. He's not "keeping it real," he's "selling out." He's actually making money off of this art form. He isn't 'hood, he's corporate.
His career is burned like a witch.
Soon, the gangsta rappers realize, "Oh, snap! It sucks to be poor just to keep it real, know what I'm sayin'?--Word. Let's take 'sell out' and call it 'pimp,' so we can own mad bling."
And soon all the masses were eating up poetry from the streets that kept it real and made money and the witch hunt was over.
