I'm sorry Gareth, but I have to disagree with you here, and this really is something I know a bit about, my current field of work is organic chemistry, but I was a double major in chemistry and psychology, and I have done extensive work in pharmacology due to my interest in psychopharmacology.

Melatonin is a drug, just because it's a naturally produced substance doesn't mean it's not a drug. The body produces only about .1 mg of melatonin in a day. Although low dose diet supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the US, in many countries melatonin requires a prescription and in some countries it is illegal to sell period.

Melatonin can interact with other drugs, did you know that you could have a serious reaction if you take melatonin and any of the following everyday prescription medications, Fluvoxamine (aka Luvox) Nifedipine (aka Adalat or Procardia) Warfarin (aka Coumadin)?  At 30mg melatonin begins to act like a contraceptive and halts human reproduction. Melatonin also has an incredibly long half life so it's level builds in your body over time.

If you live outside the USA or Canada, importing melatonin from an internet retailer could see you in trouble with your friendly local customs officers depending on where you live and your local laws.
