Paranormal Adept
O.k. quick question. I know some of the people here actually are published so here is my question. If I have actually "bought" the book and it is on my shelf. Am I wrong to download a free version to my ipod from a site such as 4shared? For instance I have the entire Dark Tower series by Stephen King. However, I don't have it on my ebook reader. Since I can get it "free" is it ethical since I already own it. Also, is it safe?

When you purchase a book (music, song, artwork, etc), you purchase the rights to use it and enjoy it as individual. You are not allowed to "share" it by offering downloads or reproduce it any manner. To do so invites legal problems.

I understand. I'm not offering it or giving it away. I'm wondering about "somebody else" giving it away and if I should take advantage of it since I've already bought it. Most here have used Napster or downloaded a song off limewire or some other method. Still, I don't want to "steal" from a person trying to make a living. But, as I said I "own" the whole series and have purchased it with my own money. Now, I have the chance to download it to my device. Just wondered if these sites are legit and if it's unethical to download something you have already purchased in another form.

I guess I answered my own question and I should just "buy" in on my Kindle account. Still, it's really tempting .

Here's the deal. If you buy the hardcover, you're not entitled to a free copy of the paperback. An ebook is just another distribution method. Authors are entitled to a fair payment for their work.

I agree. It was just really tempting. But, that doesn't make it right.

Anyway, it's amazing how many authors offer free previews and even free pdf work on the internet. I have found papers and research and I guess I'll stick to that. That way I can support the writers by "buying" their work and discover new writers and researchers by downloading what is freely offered by the artist or researcher. I'm back in balance now. I just got a little "heady" seeing my favorite author's best work "free" on the internet.
