This may be tangentially related to the wikileaks thread. It concerns the case of hacker Gary McKinnon who has become something of a folk hero in the UK according to this article.

I've been getting a lot of links via a friend who knows I'm interested in this stuff that he finds in more mainstream online sources. There's also currently a long article on J. Valle's new book on Salon.

British UFO Hacker Fights Extradition to US

I had posted last week re the NASA announcement which I thought turned out to be a bit of a snoozer. Kinda old news, actually.

Look I feel empathy for the guy regards his medical conditions and what might happen but hey he hacked into USA defense computers that's a crime! However, it does not help when 'so called secure computers passwords are poor or even non-existence by some of those working on those computers and should be checkout by those in charge of USA national security hubs.

He really isn't a hacker. He basically just logged into computers with no passwords. Lazy sysadmins forgot or didn't bother to disable remote access and didn't bother to give the admin account a password. He simply logged in and piloted the network. Was it illegal, yeah. But, in the UK it was a slap on the wrist kind of offense. The guy claims he only accessed computers looking for UFO related material and claims he found some. I am not so sure. He seems to collaborate a former NASA secretaries story from Greers Disclosure stuff. But he also claims to have seen a listing of "off world star ship names". Sounds a lot like that SERPO crap and has similar dates. It is possible that he was a novice pseudo hacker wannabe and used the UFO stuff to try and garner support for his anti-deportation struggle.

Whichever it is. It was a major embarrassment for the US government. This became an example scenario and that is why they want him in jail. Not because of the UFO stuff. In my opinion they want him in jail to send a clear message to the hacker world.
