Devil's Advocate
George Carlin is dead!

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/06/23/carlin.obit/index.html

Now who's going to point out the rampant bullshit in our modern world with laser-like accuracy?

This is the worst celebrity death I've had to experience yet I think. I'm a huge fan of his. Glad he lived a long time, but wish he was around for a lot longer.

I woke up this morning, heard this on the radio, and realized that the world sucks a bit more today, now that a True Hero has left. He was a titan, and folks who call him a comedian just don't get it - like Bill Hicks, he was a prophet, a pragmatist, an aware, intelligent person who I would have loved to have called friend. RIP, George.

I am a huge fan of him. It was pretty upsetting to find out about this a few hours ago. I highly respect George Carlin not only for being a very funny man, but also him having the courage to speak his personal views. I'm going to miss him.

RIP

CapnG,
Your original title for this thread cracked my up until I read what it was about. I didn't realize until resently how right on and honest this man was until reading some of his insights in a book. Generally speaking I don't watch TV anymore.

Here is the book. I enjoyed it very much.

I remembering seeing him in Phoenix around 2002. Some of my friends likened it to going to see Red Skelton or some other aged dinosaur that repeatedly hammered the same jokes that they had to begin with. They really had no idea.

Carlins wit, delivery, and understanding of a changing world helped mold him into a one of a kind brash truthsayer. He never held back and that seemed to be his trademark. His insight on current social culture and the like were unprecendented. It was from him that I realized the absurdity of religious Christian dogma. I found it both eye opening, refreshing, and humorous all in the same moment. See the "related thread" by Mindsky on Carlin and UFO's for some of it.

Anyway I suppose we should be thankful to have been in the presence of such a modern day comedic philosopher. Perhaps he might have lived longer if he had swam in the Hudson river even MORE often. Anyone remember that one??

When people ask me who I'm voting for I always say George Carlin. Probably still will since a dead comedian is less of a joke than a politician. I'd vote for Bush for Pressadunce though.

Yep. I remember.

I'm Mindksy:) Yes, that thing on ufos made it to a recent book by him called Where's the Pork Chops. It's 5 ft away from me as I type this, can't see the title. Something like that. Anyway it was released on the internet and passed around years ago.

I'm sad I didn't go see him in concert now. I preferred watching vids instead.

"When will Jesus bring the pork chops?" (my bookshelf is only three feet away). A title Carlin claims he chose because it "insulted all three major western religions simultaneously: The christians through Jesus, the jews through kosher and the muslims by ommision".

What bothers me is the amount of cosmic injustice in this world.

I mean, George Carlin is dead, and yet Carrot Top, Pauly Shore, and Dane Cook, all still draw breath.

I'm with you on Dane Cook. I liked Pauly, but he;s like basically dead. I like Carrot Top.

Pauly Shore was never funny. Carrot Top, not funny at all.

In fact, on my worst days, I'm far more entertaining, and I'm not even a comedian.

It's all a matter of taste.

Sorry, you made it hard to notice. If arrogance were comedy, you'd win though. If you're funnier than they on your worst day, have fun with all the money you'll make in clubs.
