American politicians are scary:

Luckily you are Canadian and your level of interest and concern can easily match your level of influence and responsibly about such things without causing you much consternation.

I have to tell you, I find it amazing that foreigners feel that American politics is any more corrupt or ridiculous than what is happening in their own countries.

Well, a lot of the issues that are a huge deal in the USA (evolution, religion, gay marriage) are much less polarizing here.

But you are right, politicians are corrupt and ridiculous no matter where you live.

GNI HEE HEE HEEE

We've got these types out west where you have them in the bible belt lol

We're a smaller version of the US (350 mils vs 35 mils) but we have the same right-wing fundamentalist christian issues... sigh.

Its the same here in Australia, There is something "supersized" about the US political scene as viewed from here, many aspects really do seem over the top in comparison to the local example

Let me give an example about our health care. I know someone that went in for tests for heart issues - waited two weeks to go for the tests. They found angina - the next day, she had an angioplasty. Cost: $0

Our health care system is far from perfect, but it's quite good and I'm happy we have it.

Its the same here, i even get free dental

I guess not having fleets of nuclear subs and missile silos frees up a lot of money for social services

I love the US but I've never understood how a country could spend so much on war and not on healthcare. A band I really like's drummer has just had a heart-attack. They are asking for donations to cover his medical bills? I would imagine he had insurance so why would he need money after having a heart attack?
Forget that - send him on 'holiday' to Scotland and we will treat his heart, gratis. Medication? Free prescription meds here for all, no exceptions. This is not the case in England, where you have to pay a nominal amount. When the chips are down all you really have is your health - of course if you are rich, you can afford the best care but most people are not in that category.
Like any country, my own has enough problems, I am very thankful that worrying about healthcare won't be one of mine.

The social safety net here is fantastic i have to say,
I was medically discharged from my Govt job, and as such get a pension, free rail travel to anywhere in australia twice a year, i can buy a transport ticket for $2.50 that can let me travel anywhere in the state for that day, rail/bus/ferry.
My car registration is free, my utility bills all subsidised,i pay five bucks a pop for prescriptions up to 300 bucks ayear after which they are free. Dr, hospital, dental all free. the list goes on and on
