In this article they are talking about possible different type of a human being who lived ~11,500 years ago. Now if Gobekli Tepe is dated to be ~12,000 years does it suggest that this kind of folks had carved those stones and erected them? -:)
BBC News - Human fossils hint at new species

PS. I plan to take a trip to this place in the end of April. I will post here some good photos I hope to take in this enigmatic place.

This NG "reconstruction" just got me chucked! LOL :-)) Looks familiar, huh? Again - brutal force, LOTS of muscled folks...basically this is like we will put up any nonsense but won't even consider a possibility of existence other highly advanced civilization before our own cause it will hurt our self-esteem....

We got back from the trip to Eastern Turkey yesterday evening. Here comes the set of photos from the Gobekli Tepe site and the museum in Urfa city - Photo album
I write caption for them once I'll be able to cut some time for it:-) In short - we really enjoyed the trip, even though we don't like traveling in a group but this time we didn't have any choice. Local folks don't speak English at all and in many places having local guide who knew how to approach local people was a must-have condition to be able to visit certain places.

Pay attention to photo #159, it shows the famous pillar with a crocodile figure on it. Yes - it's covered with a timber box and the official theory claims it's because they want to hide it from people who show unhealthy interest - we didn't know what that meant...I believe the more down to Earth reason could be that the pillar has gone to a private collection or something and the way to pretend like nothing has happened is to cover it this way...

Anyway - we really enjoyed being there, at the place which really puts official history of that period (10,000 BC) to its head. I don't think hunter-gathers were able to construct such monument with blocks that weight tons. I firmly believe that this is the evidence of a previously existed advanced civilization, which was capable of doing it.

Of course simply being next to the place didn't put me closer to figuring out who and why did this monument. But I don't subscribe the official theory that this was a worship place, it could be simply a zoological museum of that time. I think if you are capable of constructing such complex stone monument you should be aware of animals nature and so you wouldn't worship a crocodile / wolf / duck / any other animal you've found and I'm sure will find as German archeologist keep digging.
