Great post on the "Soviet Cosmos 96 capsule" theory of Kecksburg

Free episodes:

I don't but the claim that the US would've kept it secret this long. Any soviet probe from '65 would've been long considered just a piece of antiquated junk. The US had better space technology and was unlikely to have learned much if anything. And when the Cold war ended c 20 years ago, Russia was so weak the consequences of admitting having concealed it till then would've been nil. IMO the government would've revealed any soviet probe to get rid of the Kecksburg case and deal a blow to the UFO crash genre generally.

On the surface I agree. However, would they not then also have to admit and possibly atone for the years of abject denial. Also would this not also open them up to more skepticism regarding Roswell, Alien contact, the moon, and more? Maybe it is easier for them to take a hard "it never happened" stance? To me it comes down to plausible deniability not only for one incident but for the subject matter as a whole.

Oh there'd be embarrassment but secret recovery of a probe wouldn't be a big deal. They were caught fibbing at the time of the U-2 incident, gulf of tonkin etc; it's risk they're willing to take.

IMO if they can prove Kecksburg was just a piece of space junk--just like some have suggested all along--that would douse a lot of cold water on the UFO crash crowd, especially after all these years of claims that Kecksburg couldn't have been prosaic.

It never happened or "nothing happened" just won't fly; there were too many witnesses.
