Fascinating. Define "rite of passage" for me. Every one I'm familiar with involves either violence or humiliation and results in mental trauma that may require years of therapy to resolve later in life.

People have always been selfish, they haven't changed, the world has changed around them. Abundance and convinience now exist on levels prior generations couldn't have imagined. Instant gratification in every from, from credit, to the internet to microwave popcorn is now the norm but we are still just a step above cavemen and our sad little caveman brains are overstimulated.

I don't think there is a core reason as to why society is crumbling, however. It seems to me that it's just the inevitable result of where we are headed as a species.
