I just saw a UFO

Friendly Skeptic
So I'm sitting on my front porch with my wife having a coffee. I see an airplane fly over head, and then in the distance I see a redish light, slowly moving, and then it just disappeared.

I just saw a commercial airliner, as many fly over my house high up in the air, the sun reflecting off of it. It blinked out because the angle changed and the sun stopped reflecting off of it. Now I know how easy it is for someone to say they saw a UFO.

I wonder how many "documented" UFO sightings are of this nature. Another factor adding to this is the way I think versus the way a true UFO believer thinks. To me, there are so many explanations before I can even fathom considering something unknown - to the true believer though, there are probably few.

Any thoughts?

If you know what it was than it wasn't a UFO. Closest to thinking I might be seeing something was a couple of years ago. Had me wondering for a split second but it was just a meteor.

I know that it wasn't a UFO - but I'm saying that many people would think it was. I know what it was since I'm so super duper smart. :)

Whoa there, we don't need them invading us here in Quebec, so lets not make fun of them. :)

Interesting thread , I have seen circular white objects which where the size of small stars moving in a slow fashion and then all of a sudden move in inractic motion and then pick enormous speed could they be UMV or UAP/UFO which seem to have different shapes . Did I report them no because I cannot explain what they were !One time I seen a large Triangle craft with small blue light move in a gliding fashion no engine sound but a warm breeze felt as it passed over.

Although , I have seen Meteor's fly over and burn up with a orange tail and Satellites move in fast speed over the same direction each night. Millions of us most probably see strange things in the sky everyday most likely.

The Sky is full of activity day/night just like life down here:)

"All light-in-the-sky-type sightings are bullshit and should be disregarded out of hand."

Well, several people including me once saw something flashing in the night sky at irregular intervals. It looked like a tumbling piece of space junk -- except that to the naked eye and through binoculars it didn't seem to be moving. Luckily this was at a gathering of amateur astronomers so there were several large telescopes available. At 200X the object's motion against the star background was obvious. It was a piece of space junk, but in such a high orbit that without that magnification it looked stationary. Under slightly different circumstances we might have called it a genuine UFO.

... and? Even if you had no optical aids and declared it a UFO it would still be a valueless sighting of a speck of light.

Don't worry, not a lot of oil in Quebec. :)

Only one: All light-in-the-sky-type sightings are bullshit and should be disregarded out of hand.

When you see an actual object of unrecognizable type at relatively short range, get back to us.

Though I would have said this with much less ire, I know what CapnG is getting at and I agree. Yes there are some morons who think everything they think they see might just be Ambassador Zojf from Zeta Reticuli. But, that is not what most of us consider a credible type sighting anyway.

"... and? Even if you had no optical aids and declared it a UFO it would still be a valueless sighting of a speck of light."

If you were ignorant, yes. But someone familiar with the sky would have known that it was neither an astronomical object nor an ordinary aircraft or satellite.

Most people ARE ignorant of things astronomical, aeronautical and aerospace related, including ME. That fact doesn't add any value to the sighting. Quite the opposite.

As I said, we were able to determine what it was. And if we hadn't, we wouldn't have decided it was from Zeta Reticuli either. Probably we would have guessed at the high orbit space junk explanation. But it would still be unidentified.

But so what? Unless you're marrying the terms "UFO" and "alien spacecraft/flying saucer" together (and hopefully you're not), it's really a non-event. Realistically, anytime ANYONE sees something in the sky and says to themselves "I don't know what that is." they've seen a UFO. Whoop-de-doo.

We need to de-mystify the term. We need to divorce it from the exotic and ridiculous. But we should probably also seek to seperate it from the mundane and inscrutable, otherwise it's just a meaningless catch-all or a mindless buzzword.

CapnG and Ron are exactly right - that's the point I was trying to make. A slack-jawed yokel seeing what I saw would have not gone through the thought process of determining it was an airliner that looked strange because of the Sun. He would have gone to his local UFO fan and said, "I seen one of them there flyin' saucers!"

We all can agree to disagree on UAP/UFO sightings and we all know there heaps of space crap out there:D Yes the Sun must be taken in as a factor in your observations as well as the Star, Meteors,Moon, Sats, Rockets, Venus etc. Therefore are you debunker's;) saying these eyewitness folks saw just reflections from the Sun ( UAP/UFO sighted by military pilots, commercial pilots, bunker radar controllers, naval communication & pilots officers, nuclear facilities protection teams, commercial air traffic controllers, astronauts , police officer, satellites controllers, fireman, lumberjacks (work all night and all day):p,fishermen, submariner radar officers) etc;)

There's no need to narrow it down to one explanation - that's where we get bogged down and why I have a problem with people saying UAP/UFO or whatever. In my example above, I know that's what it was, and I can see how easily someone that may "want" to see a UFO can say that it is one. That was the point of my post.
Another thing, I just watched Bad Universe and they showed that because of all the cameras that are always running, we can actually see small meteors impacting the Earth, and that was rare. That makes me wonder why we don't ever catch UAP/UFOs on these cameras. And why is it that the people that watch the sky the most (astronomers like Phil Plait, host of the show) are so skeptical of UFOs?

Hi AIO,
I agree with your comments that not all UAP/UFO/UMPS are from outer space or here on Earth I just tend to think it possible that UFOs could be anything or even secret projects and I don't just follow word for word peer reviewed paper or there spoke persons for example a corporation agenda telling me what is always above our skies. Like everything in life it has a political agenda and everyone is being paid by someone and they have to follow guide lines;) In addition, cameras can easily be manipulated with technologies and don't forget its a bloody big sky up there.
