My wife just turned me on to this and I thought it was cool, so in case you ever wondered how bands happen to pick their names ... well here is the explanation. Is it true? Hell, I don't know but I suppose it is as good as any other explanation ....

HOW MUSICAL GROUPS GOT THEIR NAMES

(THE TRUE STORIES OF HOW SOME MUSICAL GROUPS GOT THEIR NAMES..................)

10,000 MANIACS: CAME FROM THE CULT HORROR FILM "2,000 MANIACS". ONE OF THE BAND MEMBERS MISHEARD THE FILM'S NAME.

PEARL JAM: SINGER EDDIE VEDDER CLAIMS HE SUGGESTED THE NAME IN HONOR OF HIS AUNT PEARL'S HOMEMADE JAM, SUPPOSEDLY A NATURAL APHRODISIAC CONTAINING PEYOTE.

MARILYN MANSON: A COMBINATION OF MOVIE ICON MARILYN MONROE AND CRIME ICON CHARLES MANSON.

DIRE STRAITS: SUGGESTED BY A FRIEND WHO WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF THE BAND'S FINANCES.

DEEP PURPLE: NAMED FOR THE FAVORITE SONG OF GUITARIST RICHIE BLACKMORE'S GRANDMOTHER, THE 1963 HIT "DEEP PURPLE" BY APRIL STEVENS AND NINO TEMPO.

BEASTIE BOYS: "BEASTIE" SUPPOSEDLY STANDS FOR "BOYS ENTERING ANARCHISTIC STATES TOWARD INNER EXCELLENCE".

ZZ TOP: SAID TO HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY A POSTER OF TEXAS BLUESMAN Z.Z. HILL, AND THE ROLLING-PAPER BRANDS ZIG-ZAG AND TOP.

COUNTING CROWS: A REFERENCE TO AN OLD BRITISH POEM THAT SAID LIFE IS AS MEANINGLESS AS COUNTING CROWS.

RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS: THE DUO GOT THEIR NAME WHEN AN AUDIENCE MEMBER SHOUTED, "HEY, THAT'S REALLY RIGHTEOUS, BROTHERS!".

BLUE OYSTER CULT: AN ANAGRAM OF "CULLY STOUT BEER". IT WAS CHOSEN BY A BAND MEMBER ONE NIGHT AS HE WAS MINDLESSLY DOODLING WHILE AT A BAR WITH THE BAND'S MANAGER.

FLEETWOOD MAC: A COMBINATION OF THE NAMES OF THE BAND'S FOUNDING MEMBERS, MICK FLEETWOOD AND JOHN MCVIE.

DEVO: AN ABBREVIATION OF "DE-EVOLUTION", SOMETHING THAT THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP BELIEVE IS HAPPENING TO THE HUMAN RACE.

HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH: SINGER DARIUS RUCKER HAD TWO FRIENDS IN HIS COLLEGE CHOIR WITH ODD NICKNAMES. HOOTIE (HE HAD WIDE EYES LIKE AN OWL) AND BLOWFISH (HE HAD PUFFY CHEEKS). NEITHER OF THEM IS IN THE BAND.

THE WHO: ACCORDING TO LEGEND, THE GROUP, FIRST CALLED "THE HIGH NUMBERS", WAS LOOKING FOR A NEW NAME. EVERY TIME SOMEONE CAME UP WITH AN IDEA, THEY JOKINGLY ASKED, "THE WHO?". FINALLY, A FRIEND SAID "WHY NOT JUST CALL YOURSELVES "THE WHO"?"

THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION: FRANK ZAPPA'S GROUP WAS ORIGINALLY JUST "THE MOTHERS". BUT THE RECORD COMPANY WAS CONCERNED IT WOULD BE INTERPRETED AS AN OEDIPAL REFERENCE AND INSISTED THEY CHANGE IT. THE BAND CHOSE THE NAME FROM THE OLD SAYING "NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION".

I always liked "Pinkertons Assorted Colours" inspired by the detective agency.
